It's a fun piece, though the postmark is prior to the first day of issue of Feb 10 if issued in New York or Feb 19 if issued in Washington DC. There is no specific catalog value for the item itself, and this is not the first item of this kind I have seen. I figure if you can get someone to pay $5 for it, you are doing well, though I suspect the going price would be around $2.

I have seen these before. They sell for $10-$15 (on a good day). I would say $10 is a fair price.

I believe the stamp smaugie was referring to is the imperf souvenir sheet issued in February 1934 (Scott #735)

The postmark on your cover would suggest that the stamp is likely Scott #733, issued October 9, 1933.

I can't give you a sense of value but there is a very interesting write-up on the history of that issue at http://www.south-pole.com/p0000142.htm

Did you know, for example, that President Roosevelt got personally involved in the design of the stamp?

Steve

EDIT: If the link doesn't work for you, search on the article's title "A Philatelic Introduction to B.A.E. II: The Stamps" -- it is by Paul Skowron.

They may not have a significant value, but IMHO they are both nice pieces and are worth keeping in any collection. As with many items, to me they would have more sentimental value than cash value.

The interest for me is the stamp stating the letter was delayed for a year. It is postmarked Jan 31, 1934 in Antarctica, and received Mar. 25, 1935 in San Francisco. This must have happened often enough for a hand stamp to have been made.

The handstamp was made up due to an error with the canceling device and the Covers were held in the Arctic until the following season. Their are several types of this handstamp if memory is correct. I'm sure someone will find all the facts on this and post them.

Another member here, David Giles, collects US Aerograms. These are considered postal stationary or imprinted postage envelopes.

BTW, those are 2 nice Byrd covers. I especially like the 1st since it was addressed to Illinois my home state.
