I'm getting closer to piecing my collection together I just picked up a Scott's International PART 5A, problem is I need the Part 5 now.

1. a helpful user emailed me telling me he has a "supplement for Vol 5 1961-62"
2. My Vol 4 seems to end 1959, and 5A starts at 1963

My Questions:

1. I thought they didn't make Scotts Supplements, that this should actually be VOL5, if so where is 1960?

2. Is my VOL 4 lacking that it ends at 1959?

I need advice from those that have these volumes on how to proceed...

What I have:
VOL I 1840-1940 -verified complete
VOL II 1940-1949 -verified complete
VOL III 1949-1955 -verified complete
VOL IV 1956-1959 Confused?
VOL 5 NONE (PROBLEM AREA)
VOL 5A 1963-1964 -Verified
VOL 6/6A 1965-1968 -looks complete
VOL 7A/7B NONE
VOL 8A/8B NONE
VOL 10 Old but still in original wrapper
VOL 11 Old but still in original wrapper
hope to stop here....

Scott did not do a perfect year end/beginning division. It should be as follows:

Part 4A: 1956-1959 USA-Jugoslavia
Part 4B: 1956-1959 Korea-Zanzibar
Part 5: 1960-1962
Part 5A: 1963-1965(some)
...

[EDIT: corrected the Part 4 year range; thanks, Larry!]

Philb brings up an good and important point.

The current Scott International Series follows the basic premise of the Scott International Junior. It was not intended to be 100% comprehensive.

The original Scott International Series, known affectionately as the "Big Browns", were very comprehensive. It consisted of 5 bound volumes (brown colored, of course).

Around the 1930s(?), Scott released an abridged version of the Big Browns, known as the Scott International Junior. This was a bound one-volume album, with a "bluish" cover. These 1-volume Scott International Juniors were re-issued yearly, so you may have an edition that ends in 1937, instead of 1940. This album does NOT contain spaces for all the stamps. It only contains spaces for stamps that Scott deemed "were likely to be acquired" by most collectors in the course of their collecting lifetime. It also contained some spaces for a number of "famous" stamps, even though they were not likely to be acquired by the average collector.

The current Scott International Series is a continuation of the concept of the Scott International Junior (Scott dropped the "Junior" from the title of the series). So the current Part 1 (in 4 sections) is actually what was originally the Scott International Junior but re-edited mostly to make things a little more spread-out/spacious. In addition to be abridged, unfortunately Scott also left out large chunks of stamps from certain areas (e.g., some Central/South American countries in the 1960s are missing many many stamp spaces).

If you want very comprehensive albums, you will have to go to the Scott Specialty Series, which has comprehensive albums for individual countries/regions.

This is one reason why some are switching to Steiner's album pages.

Philb, ya I knew they were not going to have all the stamps, but I don't expect to ever find them all and I never heard of the big browns till a week ago and specialty binders is just way to overboard for me. the scotts blue is a nice middle ground its already way too many books and stamps to find.

Khj, Thanks for the info albeit it's a dream crusher...

OH, NO.... my part 4A/B is incomplete then, I am definitely missing 1960... I was so hoping it was a VOL 5 issue.
well, then that throws a wrench in the whole works.

Ed, your Part IV should not include 1960. Part V is 1960-1965.

The Part V supplement I have for 1961-1962 includes a few 1960 issues, but not everything you will find in a complete Part V, so are you still interested in it?

You could use blank pages for the 1960 issues. You could also go shopping for another Part V and hope it's complete, this time.

I also ran into a problem with one of the volumes when I was assembling my set of Internationals. But that's the chance you take when buying second hand rather than paying the big ticket price of the current editions from Amos.

Larry is correct. That supplies dealer sheet I was looking at apparently has a few typos. I confirmed with the Amos pricelist, and the current Part IV should be 1956-1959. Sorry.

Thanks for the correction, Larry.

If you want a listing of the CURRENT number of pages for each part, click on the link below (or if the link doesn't work, then go to the Amos Advantage website and do a search for "international part"):
https://www.amosadvantage.com/scott...PagingMove=1

Click on the part of interest, and the product info will tell you how many pages are in the package.

Thanks KHJ... I was obsessing about it at work all day today, I was concerned that 2 of our senior members with uber knowledge had different answers.
I figured there had to be different copyrights and I was in for a headache matching my Volume, now that I know part IV is correct, (after the page count this coming weekend)

I can now focus on replacing my VOL 5/5A OR find a full Vol 5 with 1960, modern who, I really appreciate your emails and help with this and your offer of the 5 supplement minus 1960 its been frustrating but I think I'm better off finding a version that includes 1960.

if all else fails I know you have that...
even if I have to scrap my 5A pages I only paid $12.50 even its older binder was worth that. so I guess I'm ok it the long run

THANKS to everyone for helping with my questions on this subject weekly, I'm afraid there will be more to come on this subject.

Ed

Yeah, sorry about that. I had assumed the seller (one of the largest supplies dealers in the US) had correct information on their pricelist, but apparently that was not the case.

Thanks again, Larry, for the correction. I now see there are other typos on their pricelist.

However, it is still correct that for many of the Parts, Scott did not divide them exactly at end/beginning of year.
