I have this cover and I was wondering what the correct lingo is for the giant pointing hand stamp??

Also, when I was looking at the postmark it got me thinking about advertising.

Obliviously this postmark is advertising for this event, but not just advertising... It's MASS Advertising!! It's was a brilliant idea for getting the word out and not just locally but nationwide. All of a sudden people who live in California receive mail from a friend or relative in Chicago and see the postmark and think to themselves "Hmmm, I think I'm gonna hop in the car and road trip out there sometime between July 29th and Aug. 14th and check it out." I wonder who thought up the idea?

Lucky

Commonly referred to as an "Auxiliary Marking"

Your cover, the recipient had left the address
and the "pointing finger" alluded to that.
They are still in use today,
here is one I received in 2004 in Australia

They are collectible (isn't everything :)

The cancel to which you refer, is known as a "slogan cancel"

Who thought up the idea?

It was Colonel Henry Bishop in 1675

They are now known as "Bishop's Marks"

Hmmm: I suppose that a cover with an Elvis stamp, marked Return to Sender, would be fun...

(As a kid, I always thought the lyrics to that song were "Return December" and he was just really bummed that Christmas was over)...
(Also thought the lyric in the song "Suspicious Minds" not "Caught in a Trap" but "Caught in the Tracks" & that he was soon to be run over by a train!)

By the way: nice cover!
