I am looking here at basically 2 identical
sets of Kingsford Smith Official opt pairs.

One has a "Ceremuga" certificate at $750 reserve
the other "RPSV" royal phil soc of vic at $300 reserve

Can anyone explain that please

I think that, in the unlikely event I was bidding on these, I'd prefer an RPSV Certificate, and not just because I'm a member

However, assuming that both certificates are correct, they probably represent the extremes of approaches to setting reserves: on the one hand, start low to attract interest; on the other, start at your most optimistic, and walk away if you don't get it.

Thanks Tony,
yep, that makes sense,
I guess the dealer goes under vendor instructions,
but I was thinking, he would advise the identical reserve.
The ceremuga goes under the hammer first, the other follows directly after.

I would like to be there to see the outcome.

Yes: curious if they're both together in the same auction. But as you say, the reserves must reflect vendor instructions.

I don't suppose there's some serious difference in condition between the lots: MH versus MUH, or centring or thins etc problems?

Aaargh, I am a dummy!
I spent a while looking at the stamps
and missed the legend! MUH and MLH look the same when underneath
in the catalogue.
I only noticed the difference with two asterisks for MUH.
My apologies
RPSV is "mint lightly hinged"

SV I am not sure if I can oblige, it is a "post bid sale"
not sure if realised price is broadcast.

It always amuses me that Australian collectors say they couldn't collect the Indian States because of all the fakes there of them - yet ask the same Australian collectors to buy, for example, a Kingsford Smith OS overprint without a Certificate, and they roll their eyes and look at you as if you were an idiot.

Indeed,
our local auctioneer always warns the room before
people purchase OS opts without a cert.
