After a whole week of driving myself nuts cataloguing China, I realize that it has tired me out. I also heard India calling me so I'm going to take a few days off for writing and then I shall return to China's Scott for some more headaches. A whole week of China is about all I can handle so going back to writing Mughal biographies will be as good as a rest. I shall still drop by occasionally, see what you guys are up to.

It was a brave effort, Tony! Most of my China has been archived in a box since the 1980s. Yeah, that's how long ago I gave up! One day... Thanks for the practice, though! k |

Let's start a China Procrastinators Club! On second thoughts, let's start it next year... |

Well, I think I'll give the Emperor Babur a rest for a few days and return to my China - if it's not one headache, it's another. I have just found this in a China glassine and can't figure it out (what a welcome back!). Any assistance appreciated in advance. |

Actually, it's Japanese. As much as I could make out before the crick in my neck made me stop was that it's a tax stamp from Hyogo Prefecture (around Kobe) for the inspection of rice. The denomination is '1 sack'. |

A pure guess, stampgal, based on the shape, would be that the space is intended for a seal. The Japanese use seals in the way you and I would use signatures. (And, of course, years ago, in the days before mass literacy, as Europeans used their seals in lieu of signatures.) |

The center almost looks embossed. I can make out a face staring at me. When does the rubber room arrive? |

Indeed, that is sheaves of rice on the frame.
The centre is not blank but holds japanese characters.
