I recall that this was a special cancellation offered by the Post Office at the time (1975).

Anyone remember it? Does the "South Pole Branch" still exist?

Could it be that is where they send all the dear Santa letters?

This should have also had a black circular cancel that said "South Pole", Kind of like a sunburst, and a Cachet. Buried in the files I have a few of these that I sent away for as a kid.

I, too, sent away for it as a kid, but didn't get the special cancellation or cachet.

A web search today for the South Pole Branch New York, NY brings up a Boys' Life magazine dated 1976 which announces the special cancellation you refer to and how to get one. This cancellation, however, predates that announcement by several months. The article suggests that it was a real post office subcontracted to a private contractor to deal with mail being sent by those at the South Pole Antarctica Station.

My basic question, though: Does it still exist today or was it just in service for a few months/years?

That is probably where I found out about it. The time frame is about right.

10090 is no longer a valid Zip Code.

I've been to South Pole NY. I'll admit I never looked for a post office, use to live up in that area near Plattsburgh NY some years ago...
I know too little too late...

South Pole is/was a branch of New York PO, like Shanghai was a branch of San Francisco, CA, PO.

The Post Office has that # reserved as the "South Pole Branch, New York,NY and New York, NY". But it is listed as Not Active.
