I'm using almost Michel now, but I have the feeling, that there isn't everything. That's why I'm thinking about Gibbons. So what's your opinion? Is Gibbons better than Michel? Or is it the same? (German isn't problem for me). Thank you

It depends on country... Sometimes Michel is better than Gibbons., and sometimes it's the opposite. Gibbons usually covers British colonies & commonwealth in slightly better level of details.

If you collect Empire/Commonwealth, you must use Gibbons, in my humble opinion of course!

Greetings All

I only have Gibbons for the GB stamps plus an older one for China. I think that Gibbons is more an authority on GB and colonies plus the Commonwealth than Michel. However, when Germany, States and colonies are concerned, plus the occupational issues, then Michel is considered the authority on the matter.

I like to have foreign catalogues because they go beyond the scope of Scotts. Only problem here is cost :(

For Scandinavian stamps, I would suggest Facit.

I don't have any Gibbons catalogues, but as others, I prefer buying local catalogues since they are more closely in touch with the stamps. You do have a problem with language sometimes.

The Facit catalogue is Swedish but has english text as well so it's perfect for Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Aland, etc.

For the Netherlands, I have an NVPH catalogue. Only in Dutch but a great resource with color photos, pricing information and a short description that you can easily translate with Google translate or something.

1. Having the Gibbons catalog allows you to reference the SG numbers. It can be a real headache sometimes trying to figure out which stamp they're talking about - especially with British issues.

2. Agree with Andrew. Always get the @local@ catalog for whatever country you're collecting. They're really not that expensive if you troll e-bay on a regular basis.

If you're going to do British Commonwealth, outside North America, there really isn't any substitute for Gibbons for the general collector. Rely on Scott and (potentially) leave a lot of money on the table.

I received in the mail today a little Postal Auction catalogue from Murray Payne, England-based KGVI specialists. They state that although Bahamas SG 167a is presently priced at £375 in Gibbons, the 2011 figure will be £2500!

The message here is not only get Gibbons, but make it a recent Part One you buy, or you will really being doing some money. It is worth the investment.

I sent in a couple of bids to Murray Payne the other day, though not on that item. I begin to wonder if I shouldn't revise my bids upwards ... rather substantially.
