I have found about a half dozen different stamps from the mid 50's to the mid 70's with city and state names printed across the face of them (Amityville, NY & Oklahoma City, Oklahoma for example). Where these special stamps or just something the USPS did occasionally? If anyone could help with any info I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You very much.

They sound like precancels, generally used by bulk mailers. Such mail entered the postal stream differently and was processed differently. Mail bearing these stamps did not have to be canceled individually.

BTW, such stamps could only be used by permit holders.

These are the styles of Bureau Precancels.
There is a club for precancel collectors, The Precancel Stamp Society.

Warrior collecting precancels for fun will never put you in the poor house..there are some better U.S. stamps that have been precancelled but for the vast majority they are worth a few pennies apiece and thats for stamps going back to the 1920's !!
