when collecting stamps that have coils vs normal (4 side perferated) versions issued.

are the 4 sided perforated stamps premium or a side with 3 perforated sides?

I don't know which to keep and display as primary stamp in the album, for standard issue.

As a general rule 4 perforated sides come from a sheet,
1,2,3 perforated sides from a booklet pane, or coil.
There are exceptions of course.

Yes, soemtimes tricky, Edwin
you have to know the stamp really.
Some stamps are <only> available in booklet pane form
so that then becomes the only way to collect.

I hinge straight edge stamps if I do not know the
format it may be available in, and replace it when a 4 sider turns up.

An Aussie example of booklet pane only

I know for plate blocks or plate number singles from the US, it is cheaper and easier to get a used copy of the Durland Standard Plate Number Catalog as that will tell you which plates were tagged. For singles, you do have to rely on a lamp.
