I don't have a #307 precancel, but I do have a #309 with the same style Chiacgo precancel:

In fact, I have pages of precancels for the lower 1 cent denomination (#300), so it would stand to reason that the P.O. must have used precancels on the entire series.

The Chicago, IL, type is L-4 is one of the most common precancels, but the higher values are rarer.

Is there a difference between the L-4 and the L-4E (as shown on the nuggethill scan)?

In the Town & Type listings, the suffix indicates the method used to print the precancel. "E" stands for electrotype, "HS" is a hand stamp, "TS" is typeset, etc. Each local style number exists with only one printing method, as far as I know (although I suppose it would in theory be possible to produce an overprint using the same plate for both typeset and mimeographed overprints, for example). That is to say, if there is an L-4 E, there will be no L-4 HS, no L-4 TS, etc.

Was just on ebay. Look at Item #350355577615 ... a #307 precancel from Philadelphia. (IMO, way overpriced, though.)
