Back in the day, Farley and the crew at the USPOD signed covers and stamps from shows all over the country. This one from the first day of the 1934 National Stamp Exhibition has me stumped. Farley is easily recognized as well as Charles F. Anderson and Robert E. Fellers. The fourth signature remains a mystery. I spent an hour or more on the web and in my library trying to identify A. J. Brown. Does anyone have a clue as to who he was and why he would he be signing along with other USPOD officials?

From a June 18, 1931 New York Times article,
Captain Gustav L. Brown served on the Eleanor Bolling, supply ship of the Byrd Antarctic expedition. Captain Brown has resided in Brooklyn since his return from the polar regions and he will make his future home in Baltimore.

On May 23, 1930, the 71st Congress directed the acting Secretary of the Navy to have gold, silver and bronze medals made for the Officers and men of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition. 81 people connected with the expedition were awarded medals, including Captain Gustav L. Brown, as Master of the Eleanor Bolling.

Since we know Captain Brown lived in Brooklyn, could the signature potentially be G.L. Brown, or possibly was A.J. Brown a relative of Captain Brown who happened to be at the Byrd first day ceremony in New York representing the dignitaries involved in the expedition?

Hi rturn22, I love the cover you posted but I'm wondering if you had those signatures authenticated? I'm not a signature expert and I may be wrong, but that James A. Farley signature at the top in green looks off - have you compared it with other James Farley signatures?
