Wilhelm Pieck (1876–1960) – German communist politician who served as the first and only President of the German Democratic Republic (DDR), from 1949 until his death.
Ernst Thδlmann (1886–1944) – Leader of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD), imprisoned by the Nazis in 1933 and executed at Buchenwald concentration camp in 1944.
Rudolf Breitscheid (1874–1944) – German Social Democratic politician and prominent opponent of Nazism who died at Buchenwald concentration camp.
Wilhelm Koenen (1886–1963) – German communist politician and longtime member of the KPD who later became an important political figure in the DDR.
Georg Schumann (1886–1945) – German communist and resistance fighter against the Nazi regime who was executed in Dresden in 1945.
