78L1L?

These "A" reliefs are tough to plate. It is a bit obscured by the cancel, but I believe this is a split top line on the left.

The top line is split, but in position 78L1L it extends all the way to the S of U.S. Look for a position with a split top line that ends above the period after the S.

A little over 5 years ago I was able to obtain a nice folded letter that I posted here.

I was going through the Westpex offerings and found another piece of the correspondence so I had to have it

This was mailed 1 week prior than the one I obtained a few years back.

Does anyone know if there is a census of these Garnier letters?

Looking for some help or confirmation. This is one of the more beat-up Type IVs in my collection, but still want to plate it. I have initial plated this as 11R1L, but I also thought 31, 39 and 55R were also possible candidate.

Looking forward to Boston, only a couple week to go.

Also, wanted to share the progress on my project to complete a full Plate 1 Late. Still have a long way to go, but I enjoy the hunt.

I have 8 Type IVs I have been unable to plate. Not surprisingly, they are all Relief A.

@stallzer - very nice.

Imprints were so far away from the design, so getting one on these early plates is tough.

44L1L with nice DT under "ONE".
The enlarged recut charts on Stamp Smarter helped to quickly locate a couple of possible candidates, then the detailed ID images in the database confirmed remaining details.

(compared against other photos uploaded here, I really need to upgrade my scanner).

ZebraMan, the DT is also evident in the upper lettering and in the medallion oval behind Franklin's head. One of the best examples on the plate. Nice find.

I just picked up this beauty.
Position 7R1L, the poor man's #5.
This is the only position that made Scott #5 on the plate 1 early.
I wonder what grade this would get.

jaxom100 - That's a nice 7R1L you posted. You haven't posted for a while on the 1c Franklin threads, so I'm glad to see you haven't lost interest! I don't know what grade it might get if you submitted it for a cert, but I'd say it's at least VF even though the right lower plume is very close to the edge.

I have always wondered why this position isn't more valued than it seems to be. I could only find a couple of other examples posted on this forum. Txstamp posted one in 2017 here https://goscf.com/t/51542 He mentions the full right plume in particular which is also seen on your example. I acquired mine from a Kelleher sale in 2022 for a $150 and it surprised me that there wasn't more interest.
