Famous Architects

For my post number 500 I want to start a new thread devoted to famous architects and I wish to begin with the most famous architect of my country, Catalonia: Antoni Gaudí I Cornet (Reus or Riudoms, 1852 - Barcelona, 1926).
Card issued for the 2011 Barcelona Water Co Philatelic Society Stamp Show. It depicts the fountain-monument (Xaviert Robert, 1952) devoted to the architect in front of his most well know work (although by no means the best!) building. The Basilica of la Sagrada Familia (1882 - ?)and on the avenue that bears his name. It also shows a cartoon of him appeared in 1926 on the Barcelona's newspaper "La Vanguardia". The postmark was drawn by Joaquim Baliarda.

Antoni Gaudí (Reus/Riudoms, 1852 - Barcelona, 1926). Architect, his best known work is the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia (Barcelona, 1882 - ?). His signature is placed on a drawing of the said temple issued on the stamp commemorative of the 150 anniversary ofGaudí.

Philibert de l'Orme (c. 1514–1570) was a French architect, and one of the great masters of the French Renaissance. Here is an image of a semi-postal stamp featuring a portrait of de l'Orme in the foreground, and in the background a view of the Château d'Anet (Eure-et-Loir) which he constructed in 1550 for Diane de Poitiers (1499-1566), designed by Clément Serveau, engraved by Pierre Béquet, and issued by France on February 12, 1970 to benefit the Red Cross, Scott No. B434, Y&Y No. 1625, plus a photo of the portal of the Château d'Anet.

Jakob Prandtauer (1660-1726) was an Austrian Baroque architect who was trained as a stonemason rather than as an architect. He designed and supervised the construction (between 1702 and 1736) of the magnificent Baroque church of Melk Abbey, an Austrian Benedictine abbey in Melk, Lower Austria. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Prandtauer in the foreground, with Melk Abbey in the background, designed by Adalbert Pilch, engraved by Rudolf Toth, and issued by Austria on July 16, 1960 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Prandtauer's birth, Scott No. 655, SG No. 618, plus a photo of the abbey.

Camillo Sitte (1843-1903) was an Austrian architect, city planner, art historian, and painter. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Sitte, designed by Prof. Otto Stefferl (1931-), engraved by Alfred Nefe, and issued by Austria on April 17, 1968, Scott No. 808, plus a photo of the architect.

Paul Wallot (1841-1912) was a German architect of Huguenot descent, best known for designing the Reichstag building in Berlin, erected between 1884 and 1894 to house the Imperial Diet. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Wallot and a depiction of the Reichstagsgebäude, printed by combined engraved and lithography, and issued by Germany on June 4, 1991, Scott No. 1653, plus a photo of Wallot and an image of a sketch of the building at its opening in 1894.

One of his many architectural feats, the Guggenheim Museum in New York:

François Mansart (1598-1666) was a French architect who is credited with introducing classicism into the Baroque architecture of France. He made extensive use of a four-sided, double slope gambrel roof punctuated with windows on the steeper lower slope, creating additional habitable space in the garrets that ultimately became named for him: the mansard roof. Here is an image of a semi-postal (charity) stamp featuring a portrait of Mansart and a depiction of Carnavalet Palace, designed by Jean Pheulpin, engraved by Georges Bétemps, and issued by France on February 12, 1966 as one of a set of five stamps benefiting the Red Cross, Scott No. B394, Y&T No. 1471, plus a portrait of the architect which was probably the model for this stamp's design, and a photo of portal to the palace, which is now operated as part of the Carnavalet Museum in Paris. Note: The palace was originally built c. 1560, but it was subsequently renovated and expanded by Mansert c. 1655.

Oscar Niemeyer "was a Brazilian architect who is considered to be one of the key figures in the development of modern architecture. Niemeyer was best known for his design of civic buildings for Brasília, a planned city which became Brazil's capital in 1960, as well as his collaboration with other architects on the United Nations Headquarters in New York City".

This was elected as the best stamp of 2008 in the country but other issues about him were already released in the past.

Gottlieb Eliel Saarinen (1873-1950) was a Finnish architect who became famous for his art nouveau buildings in the early years of the 20th century. He was also the father of Finnish American architect Eero Saarinen. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Eliel Saarinen and a project (1908) for a Parliament Building on Observatory Mountain in Helsinki, designed by Finnish artist Paavo Huovinen, printed by lithography, and issued by Finland on August 20, 1973 to commemorate the architect's birth centenary, Scott No. 532, Facit No. 732, plus a photo of Eliel Saarinen, and a photo of one of the buildings he designed, Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo, New York, which opened in 1940.

Walter Burley Griffin (1876-1937) was an American architect and landscape architect best known for his role in designing Canberra, Australia's capital city. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Griffin and the coat of arms of Canberra, designed and engraved by Australian artist and engraver Bruce Stewart, and issued by Australia on March 8, 1963 to commemorate Canberra's 50th anniversary, Scott No. 353, plus a photo of Griffin at work in 1912.

Carlo Maderno (1556-1629) was a Swiss-Italian architect who is regarded as one of the fathers of Baroque architecture. His façades of Santa Susanna, St. Peter's Basilica and Sant'Andrea della Valle were of key importance in the evolution of the Italian Baroque. Here is an image of a semi-postal (charity) stamp featuring a portrait of Maderno, designed and engraved by Karl Bickel, and issued by Switzerland on December 1, 1956, Scott No. B257, plus a photo of the façade of St. Peter's Basilica, Rome.

Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Austrian architect Baron Karl von Hasenauer (1833-1894), and depicting one of the major buildings he designed, the Natural History Museum in Vienna (1871–1891), designed by Otto Zeiller, engraved by Kurt Leitgeb, and issued by Austria on July 20, 1983 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of von Hasenauer's birth, Scott No. 1248, plus a portrait of the architect c. 1880, and a contemporary photo of the museum.

Happy Birthday to Raoul Gustaf Wallenberg (1912-1947?), a Swedish architect, businessman, and diplomat who rescued tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews from the Nazis during the Holocaust, but was subsequently imprisoned and allegedly executed in the Soviet Union. Here is an image of a stamp honoring Wallenberg for his humanitarian efforts, designed by Swedish artist Ingalill Axelsson, engraved by Martin Mörck, and issued by Sweden on August 10, 1987, Scott No. 1643, Facit No. 1460, plus a photo of Raoul Wallenberg.
