Great idea for a topic rod222. Having recently moved to a house with our first garden, I love planting trees. Some coconut palms from Promthep Cape in Phuket, Thailand: Technically not a tree, but I hope it passes the test, this is my best tree-like stamp :) 30th Anniversary of ASEAN, 1997. |

Nice one SciFi7 I missed that lovely scene when in Phuket :( Looks lovely. Are you sure they are coconut palms? BTW, Happy Buddhasmas. Possibly the most well known tree stamp in the world, South Africa's Orange Tree |

You're right rod. I am an enthusiastic, but hopeless gardener. I asked Mrs scifi. They are not coconut palms in Thai they are dtan trees. They have fruit that looks like a coconut. Apparently I have even eaten it, but I guess it is not memorable. Still don't know the English name though. We mainly have foxtail palms in our garden - native species of Australia I think. I haven't been to Promthep Cape yet either. We usually go to Krabi when we go south. I have a project on the back-burner to visit all the places I see on Thai stamps. I think I will open it up worldwide and turn it into a topic on SCF. Thanks for the good wishes of the season, all the best to you and yours also. Just another Sunday here! |

Tree cancels very welcome, :) evidences some artiface in Cork engraving.
SciFi7 Still not convinced Dtan tree, Mimusops elengi (Sapotaceae), which is shorter and bushier than on the stamp. I don't recall Dtan trees in Thailand, or their fruit. I'll have to consult Gibbons to see what they offer in way of explanation.

I think you're the expert, rod222, I am just guessing at trees :)
Another guess: are they sugar palms? That would fit with "dtan" in Thai...
That's a great tree cancel! |
