Famous Architects

Hans Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff (1699-1753) was a Prussian architect and painter. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of the architect, designed by Joachim Hans Hiller, engraved by Egon Falz, and issued for use in Germany (Berlin) on February 15, 1974 to commemorate the 275th anniversary of Knobelsdorff's birth, Scott No. 9N344, Michel No. 464, plus an image of a portrait of Hans Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff in 1738 by French-born Prussian court painter artist Antoine Pesne (1683-1757), and an image of an 1850 steel engraving by Joseph Maximilian Kolb of one of Knobelsdorff's most important works, the Berlin Opera House.

Josef Hlávka (1831-1908) was a Czech architect, builder, philanthropist and founder of the oldest Czech foundation for sciences and arts. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Hlávka, designed by Czechoslovak artist Jozef Baláž (1923-2006), combined engraved by Miloš Ondrácek (1936- ) and photogravure, and issued by Czechoslovakia on March 10, 1981, Scott No. 2348, plus images of a photograph of the architect in 1903, and of the Residence of Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans in Chernivtsi, built by Josef Hlávka, and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Jørn Oberg Utzon (1918 – 2008) was a Danish architect. He is most notable for designing the Sydney Opera House in Australia which was declared a World Heritage Site in 2007.

Maya Lin (1959 - ) is the world-renowned architect of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D. C., and one of the most important public artists of this century.
US Postal Service issued a 20-cent commemorative stamp on November 10, 1984 depicting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and honoring the men and women of the armed forces who served in the Vietnam war.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886 – 1969) was a German-American architect. Along with Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius and Frank Lloyd Wright, he is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern architecture.
Mies created an influential twentieth-century architectural style with extreme clarity and simplicity. He made use of modern materials such as industrial steel and plate glass to define interior spaces. He called his buildings "skin and bones" architecture.
Some of his notable work includes Villa Tugendhat (Brno, Czech Republic), Neue Nationalgalerie (Berlin, Germany), Illinois Institute of Technology S. R. Crown Hall (Chicago, Illinois), Farnsworth House (Plano, Illinois), and Seagram Building (New York City, New York).
Deutsche Bundespost Berlin issued a stamp on February 13, 1986 to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ludvig Mies van der Rohe.

Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (1898 – 1976) was a Finnish architect and designer, as well as a sculptor and painter. His work includes architecture, furniture, textiles and glassware. He used native birch wood and plywood and his new bentwood techniques to create curvilinear design. His most well-known architecture work includes Paimio Sanatorium and Finlandia Hall.
The Finnish Post issued a stamp in memory of Alvar Aalto on November 4, 1976.

Le Corbusier, byname of Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris (1887 – 1965), was a Swiss-French architect, designer, painter, urban planner, and writer. He belonged to the first generation of the International school of architecture. His designs combine the functionalism of the modern movement with a bold, sculptural expressionism. His most notable works include Villa Savoye, Villa La Roche, and Notre Dame du Haut.
Monaco Post issued a stamp on November 16, 1987 to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Le Corbusier.

Jean Renaudie (1925 – 1981) was a prominent French architect, well-known for his design of The Housing Building in Ivry-sur-Seine. La Poste issued a 2.40 Fr. Stamp on April 20, 1985 to showcase the modern urban living complex.

Luis Ramiro Barragán Morfín (1902 – 1988) was a prominent 20th-century Mexican architect and landscape architect. He sought to reconcile traditional Mexican architecture with international modernism. His serene and evocative houses, gardens, plazas, and fountains won him the Pritzker Prize in 1980.
Correos de Mexico issued a stamp on November 7, 2002 to mark the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Luis Barragan.

Remment Lucas "Rem" Koolhaas (1944 - ) is a Dutch architect, architectural theorist, urbanist and Professor in Practice of Architecture and Urban Design at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. Rem Koolhaas won the Pritzker Prize in 2008.
One of the two EUROPA 1987 stamps issued by the Dutch Post on May 12, 1987 features the Netherlands Dance Theater in The Hague designed by Rem Koolhaas.

Frederick Law Olmsted (1822 – 1903) was an American landscape architect, journalist, social critic, and public administrator. He is popularly considered to be the father of American landscape architecture. Olmsted is best known for designing the grounds of New York City's Central Park, the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina, and the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. During his 38-year career he completed numerous projects, including residential suburbs, city squares, park systems, scenic reservations, and university campuses.
A 33-cent Frederick Law Olmsted commemorative stamp was issued in Boston, Massachusetts, on September 12, 1999.

Adolf Franz Karl Viktor Maria Loos (1870 – 1933) was an Austrian and Czechoslovak architect and influential European theorist of Modern architecture. His essay Ornament and Crime advocated smooth and clear surfaces in contrast to the lavish decorations of the Fin de siècle and also to the more modern aesthetic principles of the Vienna Secession. Loos became a pioneer of modern architecture and contributed a body of theory and criticism of Modernism in architecture and design. His major works include Stiner House, Rufer House, Villa Muller, and Villa Karma.
The Austrian Post issued a stamp featuring The Looshouse, Michaelerplatz, Vienna, on January 13, 1995 to mark the 125th birthday of Adolf Loos.

Max Fabiani (1865 – 1962) was an Italian-Austrian-Slovenian architect of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for his contributions to the Viennese Secession style, which he helped introduce to Slovenia along with architects Ivan Vancas and Ciril Metod Koch. His most notable works include Mladika Palace, Trieste National Hall, Palace Urania, and Groznia restoration project.
Slovenia Post issued a stamp on January 30, 2015 to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Max Fabiani.

Louis Henry Sullivan (1856 – 1924) was an American architect, and has been called the "father of skyscrapers" and "father of modernism". He is considered by many as the creator of the modern skyscraper, was an influential architect and critic of the Chicago School, and an inspiration to the Chicago group of architects who have come to be known as the Prairie School. Along with Henry Hobson Richardson and Frank Lloyd Wright, Sullivan is one of the recognized trinity of American architecture. He received the American Institute of Architects posthumously in 1944. His notable work includes Wainwright Building, Prudential (Guaranty) Building, National Farmers' Bank, and Carson, Pirie, Scott and Company Building.
National Farmers' Bank, widely recognized as one of the premier pieces of Prairie School Architecture in America, was featured in a stamp issued by the U.S. Postal Service on August 28, 1981.

Frank Owen Gehry (1929 - ) is a Canadian-born American architect, residing in Los Angeles. A number of his buildings, including his private residence, have become world-renowned attractions. His works are cited as being among the most important works of contemporary architecture. Among his many spectacular buildings are Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Maggie's Centre in Dundee, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Dancing House Prague, Vitra Design Museum Germany, Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art, and Art Gallery of Ontario.
Maggie's Centre in Dundee is featured in a Modern Architecture stamp series issued by the Royal Post on June 20, 2006, and Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao is featured in a stamp issued by Corerros on June 2, 2000.
