Brian,
I couldn't find a good picture to post, but here is the description of Type III from a description on Siegel's website (which, by the way, is probably the most useful philatelic website there is!);
"The Type III design of the 15c Re-Issue is similar to the Type I, except it lacks shading lines around the vignette. The Rose book (p. 104) notes that essays of Type III are known from 1868, indicating this type was contemplated but never used for the original 1869 Issue. The vignette plate based on Type III was made for the Re-Issue." |

Well, I found excellent images of type III but when I try to upload them here, I am receiving a message that the file name is not acceptable to this site (whatever the heck that means)! The file pictures are simple numbers, so I can't imagine why they aren't acceptable? If anyone else knows how to upload from an email, I can send the images to them and they can upload them here? Contact me at << Email Removed >>

Thank you, but I'm pretty sure that the scans I put into my "Pictures" file, then transfer into an email, are JPG files(?) |

The only time that I've ever had a problem uploading a picture to SCF is if the picture was already open in another program while I was trying to complete the transfer. If you are saving as a JPG, and the extension is correctly shown as a JPG, it sounds odd that it isn't working. Good luck Bill, and glad to have you on board. |

@boygenius39 did you ever get a certification issued?
I went by the experts opinion in this thread and followed their direction for differentiation. The links to the Siegel Auction collection are now helpful since they have found 2 114a that are not on gray paper. I know my 114 is not a 125 since the color is not near as clear, and the cancel is reflective of the time period of the 114. However, after much searching for a grill through watermark fluid and different UV attempts; I have as of yet still to determine a pressed grill.
I just need to be put out of my misery and confirm that what I have is really a 114. The previous owner (collector) did mark it as 114A ... but I'm not sure of his philatelic background. Anybody else have an idea to determine a pressed grill other than an expensive certification .. ?? |

How are grills pressed out? I keep picturing a very small clothes iron. |

I put two pieces of watercolor paper inside this cover after soaking it in warm water, then pressed it between layers of paper and glass, Used a book for weight. Nail polish remover for the tape residue. Made other repairs during the process. |
