Having a degree in Geology, I really appreciate Namibia giving the actual chemical formula of the mimetite. That seems above and beyond what would be necessary on a stamp.

Gemstones are another passion of mine and I've pretty well self tought myself at least the basic understanding of gemology but a far cry from geology. As with stamps there are the basics and then the rareities and prices to match. Also same as stamps the mass amount of fakes and fraudulent sellers are running rampid. In past 2 weeks I;ve received either synthetic or lab created gems being passed off as genuine. Fortunatly received refunds without having to return the items so I have some interesting fake samples that still are quite amazing with the cut and characteristics.

Nitro--Thanks for posting the US stamps. I think those are some of the most beautiful ones the USPS has ever done.

Lock--- That's a great collection! Thanks for sharing pictures.

Those specimens are amazing. Always wanted to go to Northern ontario to hunt some amethyst formations. Not that quartz is super special but I love the growth strutures in large specimens. I'm going to stop or I'll need to find a gemology forum to vent. If your son has any small=med geodes I'll trade stamps for crystals. I knew I could get back on topic.

I originally posted this on the "Books on Stamps" link and then noticed it also has a gem on it. At least, that's what I think the green thing at the bottom right is!

Just got back from Germany, where I collected these gems at the Postamt:

Ruby (Rubin)
Emerald (Smaragd)
Sapphire (Saphir)

Issued on 2nd January 2012, with a charitable donation in support of social welfare (I think).

I wasn't watching what was going on at the counter, and didn't get all stamps from the same side of the sheet. Lesson learned.
