Nethryk, those last Laos stamps remind me of something about their design but I can't pin point it. The designs look somewhat medieval, like on a tapestry, kind of two dimensional rather than the 3D look artists go for now. Love the teeth. Nice doggie.

Hi Nethryk, lovely stamp from Mayotte showing a Maki, appreciate the strategically-drawn leaves .
This reminds me of the William Farquhar collection of natural history drawings, which were commissioned
by Farquhar during his time as British Resident & Commandant of Malacca from 1803- 1818.
As photography was not available then, painting was the only means of recording nature & wildlife.
However, drawings of mammals were 'politely' rendered & could not be entirely anatomically accurate.

Drawing of a Gibbon from the collection

Farquhar was involved in the discovery & identification of several indigenous species including the Binturong.

Leng, good information on the Farquhar collection & the stamps featuring the drawings. I have seen the drawings in a museum in
Singapore but have not seen the stamps. haha agree about that Mayotte lemur/maki stamp.

Puzzler - Thanks. Yes, each artist has a unique vision.

Leng - Thanks. Maybe the maki was merely modest?

Here is an image of a stamp depicting a wolverine (Gulo gulo), designed by Ingalill Axelsson, engraved by Lars Sjööblom, and issued by Sweden on January 31, 1989 as one of six stamps in an endangered animals set, Scott No. 1723, Facit No. 1541.

What a beautifully engraved Wolverine stamp!

Honey badger (Mellivora capensis) on Kazakhstan 2009 stamp. The honey badger a.k.a. the ratel,
is more similar to the marten & weasel family than badgers.
