Have several of these Portuguese stamps with the star shaped holes punched through. I see it says Porto on one cancel, and see Po and o on other two. My guess is some revenue use, much like telegraph holes on Spanish stamps? Probably effects the value in the same way, 20 cents per $20?

I could be wrong on this. I just came across a mint stamp with the same star shaped hole.

I seem to recall that stamps with a star "punch" were used on official (government) mail; Portugal did not have "official" stamps until 1938. Uruguay did the same thing after 1928.

The Star shaped punch was applied through the stamps on Telegram Forms.

Mint copies would not be obtainable but many of the stamps were cancelled by crayon or pencil.

Stamps with the punch are worth a small fraction of normally cancelled stamps,

It's worth checking, however, for cancels. I have a Port. stamp, complete with star punch out, and a Macau cancellation from a year or so before Macau started issuing stamps.

Gentlemen, thank you very much for the information and advises.

Nice to know that they worth at least 30% of the value. Beats Spanish telegraph used stamps that are about 1% of the value (based on Scott).
