Just wondering if anyone collects giraffes on stamps? I started collecting giraffe figurines, postcards, ect, about 9 years ago, and it naturally lead to giraffes on stamps. I can't show any of mine right now, because my computer is down, and I am using my laptop, but I would love to see if anyone else has any. Or if anyone even collects such a topic.

When I think of giraffes, I think of postage stamps from Nyassa (which Phil already showed!)... of provisional issues (the surcharged stamp is a reprint)... of the new republic... of earning money... of owing money... k |

Thanks! I usually keep my stamps to myself (not many stamp collectors in my neck of the woods). But I see how much fun you all have posting pics of your stamps! I guess I've been missing out on an important part of philately. Since I've got my scanner back, I thought I'd start posting a few here and there.
In my Nyassa giraffes, I'm still missing the horizontal REPUBLICA surcharges of 1918; but those catalog for ~$100 each, so not really high priority on my long list of things to get! |

I see a few giraffes that I don't have, but most of them I do. Here is one of my pages of giraffes. |

Anyway, I'm trying to put together a definitive listing of all giraffe related stamps ever issued, starting with the 1901 Nyassa Giraffes and Camels collection and working forward. It's on the web (although not yet indexed by google, so searching for it probably won't turn it up) but I won't link to it here for fear of this post also being deleted.
By my reckoning there are about 140 or so sets. I'm finding it quite hard to delineate what constitutes an issue and what doesn't - as an example, I'm including in that 140 the various overprints of the 1901 Nyassa sets, so that counts as another two sets at least). A further example would be the 1954 Kenya/Uganda/Tanganyika definitives, which have 14 stamps two of which feature giraffes, but which were then reissued with official overprints in 1959 - in my book that constitutes two sets.

This is a nice topical collection. I like the focus on 1 particular animal. My sister in law loves white tigers. Maybe I should start looking for them on stamps for her. Being a US stamp collector you don't see giraffes or white tigers on our stamps. I rarely search out other countries stamps. When I looked at these stamps I thought of my visits to various zoos on a nice summer day. Thanks for sharing. |

Welcome to Stamp Community Forum, GS! Yes, my understanding of the rules is that Drive-By links are not permitted by new members. Get your post count up first. I did visit your site before the link was removed. It's a very nice site, well-organized. I expanded a few of your pics by clicking; a few of the pics could be much larger. Also, at least one of your pics doesn't show for some reason. Again, very nice site. Kim |

Hi Doodles........
I don't believe that Altay is a ligitimate stamp issuing entity......the Altai mountains are in what used to be Russia.....the "stamps" do not show a unit of currency.....also, it is not on any list of countries that I've found.
.....decent pictures of giraffes, but not stamps.
