Hi Everyone, I thought it might be fun to start a thread on modern local posts. The first item I've selected is Herman (Pat) Herst Jr's Shrub Oak Local Post. Here is a postcard from 1971 This local post issue depicts Alfie, carrier number one. John

There are several north of the border, too. Unfortunately the only Kaulbach Island locals that I have are off-cover.
There was also, for a time, a ferry service between Port Angeles, WA and British Columbia -- an international local post! |

bookbndrbob: That's a nice Kingdom of Edelweiss cover! codehappy: I don't think we should limit postings to just covers, singles and souvenir sheets should be fine as well... My posting for today is Gus Letter Express, from South Walpole MA, also from 1971: John River of the Monks Local Post |

The Art Cover Exchange (ACE) is a great resource for talented cachet artists, some of whom run local posts. This 2008 cover is from TNT Local Post (Ted Tompkins ACE #338) out of Schoolcraft, MI. It remembers Jim Henson. John River of the Monks Local Post |

Some web research reveals: The Grand Duchy of Barre was created in 1964 in Chicago, Illinois. It is a virtual medieval monarchy peopled by a single King and many princes, knights, counts, princesses, lords, prime ministers and several other esteemed and privileged individuals. All citizens are issued a numbered citizenship card without which they may not enter the country. Many of these citizens were from Kelly High School and later the University of Illinois. GDBers need not renounce their US citizenship as they are allowed dual citizenship while in good standing. It's name arose from a Peter Sellers movie "The Mouse That Roared" which took place in the fictional Grand Duchy of Fenwick. The last part of our country was named after a musical guitar fingering technique. At its peak in about 1970, it numbered well over 100 citizens in the United States, Canada and New Zealand. For a time, the GDB published a monthly newspaper, the "BarreBituate". A Senior Council consisting of about 5 ruling members made the bigger decisions on citizenship and meetings, which in real countries are sometimes known by the more quaint term "parties". I know little to nothing about the District of Columbia Local Post - perhaps someone else does? Here is a cover from 1975 with an interesting White House Mailroom stamp. Did the PM of DC Local Post work there? John River of the Monks Local Post |
