This thread is for showing or enquiring about Melbourne cancellations before 1966.

The earlier cancellations had a device number followed by a time code.

e.g. 19O meant that device 19 cancelled the item between 12 noon and 12.30pm.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Rod222 and Pshann.

I have removed the dates now and just opened it up to any Melbourne cancellations on pre-decimal stamps.

That's a nice little assortment Pshann, thank you.

Collectors like to sort them into types (e.g. duplexes, single circles, double circles) then, within those types, canceller numbers (e.g. 19) with all the various time codes for each canceller number (e.g. 19A, 19B, 19D etc.).

That's a beautiful example of one of the 'duplex' cancellations on the newspaper wrapper - thanks Rod222.

That is an hammer identification device.
Imagine a Post Office with say a counter with 3 clerks,
each with their own hammer. a b, c etc

This is a great way to keep a check on cancelling devices,
in the event of theft, misuse etc.
Most are kept in safes during times of non requirement.

When hammers are sent away for repair, Hammers with "Relief" are issued.

Just found 3 in my small collection. I like the Rialto version.

I should note that the first post in this thread says to post anything before 1966. Should that be 1906?
