Thank you. I am thinking Canceller No 3 8i ? Hammer beginning to disintegrate over BO Your example suggests the circle break is a new EKU (earliest known use) "3" has a definite lean to starboard. |

Quote: I should note that the first post in this thread says to post anything before 1966. Should that be 1906? Partime, I originally asked for 1861-1912 but extended that to include all pre-decimal Australia (up to 1966) so that Melbourne postmarks on kangaroos, KGV (such as Pshann's cover) and others could be included. |

Noting John's hammer impression (3A) and The Catalogue (3L) would we be on the right track to assume there were at least 12 postal clerks operating out of the Melbourne GPO counters.
I recall the Perth GPO, and the vast amount of clerks windows circa 1970 and the associated cacophony of sound, of cancellers being struck on mail.

Quote: Cannot identify this cancel Any information would be appreciated It is a 3-3-3-3 Number 1 Cancel. I have no information on it, shall have to await the specialists This stamp often has the handsome "Piecrust" cancel. Your stamp was printed in a plate of 50 (5 rows of 10) Your stamp (ZC) is the penultimate stamp (row 5 stamp 9) The last row of stamps in the plate shows a master "Ooops" the stamps are engraved QV, RW, SX, TY, UX, (missing V) WZ, XA,YB, ZC, WM. |

Note: Your stamp is referred to commonly as "Queen on Throne" which is incorrect.
It is really "Queen on Coronation Chair"
PS: Sorry Fairdinkumstamps for "hijacking" "Melbourne" thread

Quote: Hi all Cannot identify this cancel Any information would be appreciated Thanks There are three versions of this Melbourne numeral 1. They are 9mm, 9.5mm or 11mm high. The 9mm has the serif at a 45 degree angle, the 9.5mm is at almost 90 degrees. These were not used after 1861. |
