lithograving - Well, at least this thread is now at least twice as good as when I was the only one posting! And judging by the number of times it has been read, this thread is still far and away the most popular one among all of the SCF topical threads. Besides, there are still many more deserving stamp engravers whom we have not yet mentioned here. - nethryk

Help... My Father was born in 1928 in London. His best friend was a man by the name of Alan Dow... my father has mentioned he went on to be an engraver of some recognition. In their early 20's Alan and my father rode their bicycles across half of Europe, just the two of them.
My Dad is 83 and was looking to catch up with him... I'm just trying to help him out. This group seemed like it might be up to the challemge of finding him... hopefully still with us.
Ian - Nigel Alan Dow was born in London in 1929. After a 52-year career as an engraver, Dow retired in 1997. His last employer that I am aware of was De La Rue plc. You might be able to get some current contact information about Alan Dow from them: Email: group.communications@uk.delarue.com Phone +44 (0)1256 605000 Fax +44 (0)1256 605004 Post: De La Rue plc, Jays Close, Viables, Basingstoke, Hampshire RG22 4BS If you are successful, please share with us the rest of the story. Good luck! - nethryk
Nethryk: while I'm waiting expectantly for these two old friends re-unite may I ask if "we" have any engraved stamps on here that can be attributed to Alan Dow? "Dow" is a difficult search word given the "dowager" queen, etc.
Nethryk: thanks for providing that information. I missed those scans while I was "awol" during the summer season. I can see now what a great tool that index will be.
Ian: thanks for the personal note regarding your father. Its amazing how an aspect like that reinforces one's tie to a particular post or engraver, which in this case is your father.
