Many countries have made use of overprints and Panama is certainly one of those countries that seems to have been a habitual producer of overprints. Here are a few to share from my album (dates included for you Rod). I'll admit one of the first pair is not overprinted, but a nice stamp all the same.

Hope to add more later.

Thanks for sharing your overprints smauggie. They are really interesting. I collect Panamanian overprints too but only have one of the ones that you posted. Please keep posting them.

Here are a couple more images of overprinted Panamanian stamps that may be of interest to you. Sorry there are no dates nor nice little informative captions to go with them.

Technically that first stamp is a Canal Zone overprint (issued by a US government entity) on a stamp borrowed from Panama. Of course I am from the Canal Zone, so I always love to see them.

Have you checked out the 3rd and 4th Panama series that also is used for CZ #11-20? There are numerous varieties of color, spacing, font and broken lettering of the Panama OP.

Here is a block of CZ#12 from this series. The Panama stamp is identical but lacks the "Canal Zone"

I am in the middle of plating these CZ stamps and am looking for a better resource for the Panama OP on Colombian stamps than what I have (FEHeydon's book and the CZStamps by Salz, etal.)

I would say that you are much further advanced in the study of Canal Zone varieties than I am. That certainly is a lovely block! I only have one or two of this style (double overprinted Canal Zone Colombian stamps). I have not begun to collect these in earnest as yet. Still working on my Panama collection right now. I would love to have a few of these on covers, and will at some point.

Thanks for the information. I now know that the underlying stamp is Colombian. It was a bit hard to tell on my stamp, poor specimen though it is

Here are a pair of more recent overprints for the first national numismatic and philatelic exposition.

The overprinting process has damaged the surface of the second stamp somewhat.

Here is a blow-up of the 5c map overprinted "Panama", without "Canal Zone".

I was fiddling with my Panama stuff tonight and found this really nice UPU overprint on a another beautiful ABNC engraved issue. The stamp caption says "Pollera campesina" which I think translates as Peasant Skirt. I am sure Smauggie will confirm.

Edit: OOOOps forgot image

Edit again: Petertheo already showed this one: ......

The Pollera is the national dress of Panama (for women). There are a couple of styles of Pollera. The one featured on the stamp is the "country" style. It is simpler than the more fancy get-ups you will find in the bigger towns and cities.

This is a great link about Polleras.
