Came across these two in a box of foreign stamps. What are the countries? Are they genuine or just CTO's made for collectors? (The printing seems quite poor to me if they are indeed genuine stamps.) Thanks.

I only assume the other one is from a similar set from that country, as it has same cancel as my example and the sand script seems to match in the bottom right, I cant make out the spelling of the words however so I cant do any searches on the blue one. |

A great question. I am still not sure I have the story 100% but here goes. Ajman is among the several countries that issued stamps in the 1960's and early 1970's which later made up the UAE (small country in the southwest Arabian peninsula). What you have are some of their earlier CTOs, and they were not really postally used. These countries are often called the Trucial States. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trucial_StatesThe governorship of Manama was a sister country to Ajman and also issued stamps for collectors. Manama consists mostly of the city of Manama, which is the capital of Bahrain. |

Cinderellas. They never carried out postal duty. commonly referred to as "dune" stamps. |

These Manama stamps are also supposed to be from Ajman. This is is a different Manama from the one in Bahrain and is a small inland area within the UAE on the border between Sharjah and Fujairah that is controlled by Ajman. |

Just a small correction Smauggie. The Manama in the United Arab Emirates has nothing to do with Bahrain. It is a separate city in eastern UAE, part of Ajman. |

Thanks, all! It's what I thought. I have several others of these "stamps", most depicted in the sheetlet shown above. I was originally suspicious becuase of the poor print quality. I also don't understand how rockets/satellites and sports figures and animals all wound up on the same sheetlet. |

I don't know what amazes me more the fact that ROD has every stamp known to man scanned, sheets included.... or the fact that he can ACTUALLY FIND IT... which is even more amazing |

Here's a quick map of the North Eastern part of the United Arab Emirates taken from Wikipedia. It shows a small part of Abu Dhabi (in yellow) and the other six smaller emirates. I've marked with arrows two small territories that have also issued stamps: Manama (part of Ajman) and Khor Fakkan (part of Sharjah). |

I remember these from years ago. I had maybe 20 of them, or two sets it seemed to me.
Very small critters they were. I was disappointed by their smallness and the difficulty of reading and seeing them. I think they could have been a better success (?) if they were better quality and bigger. And real stamps too, that would have helped immensely.
I still remember the nice set of French jets, Mirages, from Sharjah (how I spelled it). |

Now that I know it's Ajman, I suppose these are more of the same. (I read a post recently that many self-respecting stamp collectors would never dare consider these real stamps, as they have no philatelic value and are just a rip-off to newbie stamp collectors): |

With regards to Nigel's map, that white area just to the west of Khor Fakkan is an enclave, inside UAE territory, known as Madha, part of Oman. It is located halfway between the Musandam Peninsula, also part of Oman, but not shown on the map. Oman is also to the south, not shown.
Madha belongs to the Musandam governorate. It covers approximately 75 km2 (29 sq mi). The boundary was settled in 1969 with Fujairah. The north-east corner of Madha is closest to the Fujairah road, barely 10 m (32.8 ft) away. Amazingly, within the exclave is a UAE enclave called Nahwa, belonging to the Emirate of Sharjah. It is about 8 km (5 mi) on a dirt track west of the town of New Madha. It consists of about forty houses with its own clinic and telephone exchange.
An enclave within and enclave! Surprisingly stamps were not issued, but I wonder if there was a post office. |
