Port Said Cancel On KGV

Gibbons has one line in the catalogue that says that Port Said cancels used on stamps of Great Britain indicate mail posted on British ships. Anyone know any more about this? Royal Navy? Passenger liners? Did the mail go ashore in Egypt?

Port Tewfiq (sic) Port Said, etc
was a major temporary anchorage area on the Suez,
I came through there in 1957.

In a lot of cases postcards would have been purchased
on board, and taken off at Port Tewfik and Suez
for cancellation and sorting, to be delivered back on board for posting forward, or held for ship going in opposite direction.


Port of Suez / El Suez (Bur El Suweis) 29º58´N 32º33´E
The port of Suez is situated at the southern end of the
Suez Canal, forming the Northern Port of Suez Bay,
approx. 170km S of Port Said, and 120 km. East of Cairo.


The Suez bay is sheltered except from the South,
providing a waiting anchorage area for vessels.
The port consists of :


- Port Ibrahim, providing berths for general cargo
and passenger vessels;
- New Harbour, where facilities for tankers and
livestock vessels are situated.
- Port Tewfik is used to accommodate passenger
ships and vessels transiting the Suez Canal.

The center numeral is a Roman numeral,


However, there is no 30 February (see your example) 8*),
so the month must be III (March) , IV (April) or IX (September).


As you can see in my scan:

the V in IV has serifs on it. So, I would propose
that it is IV on your scan.


Thus the date would be "30 April 1905" .


Note 1: The eleven at the end of the date is not a date.
Notice that the Alexandria cancel has an X in the samw spot.
It could be the HOUR. II = 2 and X = 10.?

Egyptian issues with port said

That Port Said is mine rod, and happy to see it again. These are normal, commercial paquebot cancels.

Here's a nice Port Taufiq example.

That's an interesting postcard Jubilee,
and adds another piece to the jigsaw of Port Taufiq.
One must assume the postcard was cancelled there,
and taken back on board, as the ship must have been going to
Australia, as she was to be "on the open sea after dinner"

Weird too, the "Ormuz" in 1925?

The Orient liner (or at least one of them) Ormuz, was renamed
in 1912. There must have been a later vessel with the same name.

The Ormuz was originally a German ship called, wait for it, the Zeppelin. In 1920, it was handed over as war reparations and renamed the Ormuz. Ironically, it was sold to Norddeutscher Lloyd in 1927 and renamed the Dresden.
