Thymallus thymallus is a salmonid fish native to central Europe. It is an endangered species because it is so sensitive to pollution of the water and lack of clean gravelly bottoms for spawning in the small rivers it inhabits. First in the August set of new semipostal stamps for youth projects.

Barbus barbus, or barbel is a cyprinid fish native to cooler parts of Eurasia. It is also a species which thrives only in clean, well oxygenated rivers with gravelly bottoms. It gets its name from the barbules at its mouth, with which it can feel for food. Second in the August set of new semipostal stamps.

Acipenser oxyrinchus, or Atlantic sturgeon could be called a living fossil. They are endangered because they mature so slowly and need unpolluted rivers for their young. The adults tend to stay closer to the coast, but migrate upriver for spawning. Third in the August set of new semipostal stamps.
