Found this in a recent batch of random stamps a friend gave me. Clearly, it's from 1975. My first thought was that it was just a "Merry Christmas" sticker. But then it struck me as a little odd that is has the phrase "US Postage" on it.

So, does anybody know what this thing really is?

Thanks!

It's a 1975 US Christmas stamp for sure.

It is Scott 1580, featuring as it says, an early Christmas card by Louis Prang.

Forgot to mention that the rate on these stamps was 10 cents. No rates were shown on the two Christmas stamps that year (the other was a traditional Madonna & Child) because the rate was uncertain at the time of production. They were the first U.S. stamps to be issued without a rate value.

Neat. Thanks, modern_who.

I'm now thinking I might make a page (or pages depending on how many there turn out to be) for U.S. stamps with no rate value as part of the design.

Of course, that begs the question of whether I should consider the "letter" stamps as having a rate value indicated or not...

Just shows how helpful the information is here on SCF.
The last post on this thread was 4 ¾ years ago and now is
still useful to one of our members.

The clear heading of the thread
1975 Christmas "US Postage" - Is it really?
was probably very helpful in finding it.

I have started very few threads but I always try to state in the
title what it's about.
Have to laugh when I see a thread started with
What is this ? or What is it worth? etc etc etc
