Bangladesh Land Animals November 9, 1977 Set of five, one stamp shows Asian elephant ( Elephas maximus). The Asian or Asiatic elephant is the only living species of the genus Elephas and is distributed only in Southeast Asia. Three subspecies are recognized: E. m. maximus (Sri Lankan elephant), E. m. indicus (Indian elephant), and E. m. sumatranus (Sumatran elephant).  |

Sri Lanka Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage July 13, 2003 Sri Lankan Elephant ( Elephas maximus maximus) Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was first established by the Sri Lankan Department of Wildlife Conservation in 1975 for feeding and providing care and sanctuary to orphaned baby elephants that were found in the wild. The orphanage has since become a tourist attraction. An elephant breeding program was launched in 1982. As of 2012 there were 78 elephants living here.  |
