Would this be considered collectible by a Machin collector? A pair with a kind of socked on the nose cancel? This came from a few small packets of fun to sort through and cheap worldwide (looking for hexagons). |

Are you kidding? Orkney Islands a tourist Mecca in Scotland. The Norwegians visited in 900 and there have been visitors ever since.

Oops I was looking at the Bulfolk (hoping the second cancel could be read better than the first) and totally missed the Orkney. Gad zooks. Great Scott! |

That's a very nice postmark! It's from the small village of Balfour on the island of Shapinsay. |

I found a couple of the more unusual machins this evening. First the 'test' self adhesive. This was issued horizontal so RM could track it easier. This is the later coil version 1997. Nice Kit-Kat cancel Secondly, one of the backprint varieties. This is a 12½p pastel green with double-lined star (typeII). Oh and a nice mint block of 17½p |

Hi Rodney, SG calls these "underprints". They were printed in blue on the back of the stamp over the gum. The initial use was on stamps sold in special discounted booklets starting in 1982 but some of the paper was used later for other stamps.
SG only prices them mint but you can find them used if you're very careful when floating them. |

This is a very interesting topic and I appreciate all of the knowledgeable people who have contributed thus far. I have a good collection of Machins (MNH and used) but thus far have been focusing most of my efforts on collecting regional Machins. I look forward to more discussions on Machins. |

There is a list of machin values and the various backprints on the adminware site - http://www.adminware.ca/machin/m_star.htmI have found a type 1 star on another 12½p that I can just make out through the envelope. I have ruined a few of these in the past as the slightest touch when wet is devastating. |

Here are a few more machin backprints showing how they can easily be lost. Apart from the type I star (2nd left) the rest are pretty much faded away. This isn't too surprising though given as the under printing was place on top of the gum so can be pretty much removed when affixing. Here's a discount 'D' on a 16p And here is the backing paper showing how the underprint transfers. |
