Boy that was fast! Thanks. I was confused by the Scott Catalog as the illustration used for the #79 shows a stamp with the "LRRL" letters in the four corners rather than "LGGL". I didn't know the letters related to plate location.
I no longer collect anything but U.S., but I seem to remember that the lower letters were the plate position. The only reason I even had the catalog is that I am getting ready to sell some of my old WW collection.
Yes, the lower letters are the plate position row-column. The top corner letters are the same except in reverse order. By convention, the bottom position letters the ones used for IDing. However, the top letters are useful if the lower letters are partially obscured by postmark or miscut. It doesn't take much to scratch your head trying to distinguish between a G and C when there is a "well-placed" cancellation, especially since they didn't put a horizontal bar on the G.
When looking at the illustrations in Scott, you have to disregard the plate letters shown, as the picture is only a sample of one position.
