I have a slew of very early English stamps starting with what I think are a couple of Scott A1 (edit typo thanks to Russ) style stamps (based on the design in the upper R/L corners rather than letters.)

They are Perf 14.

Sorry for the bad quality but I can not scan them as the book they are in is huge so I have to photograph them.

Also, can anyone tell me where I can break the code on the various letter combos on styles A2, A8, A9, A10, A14, etc?

These are going to be a bugger-bear to ID as I fear using watermark solution on them.

Thanks in advance!

Vilmar, style is A1, the A2 has frameline above value and below "POSTAGE". Now you will have to determine if they are re-engraved. See note in catalog after Scott #8.

Russ, thanks. I corrected not only the style but the title to reflect its from the 1850s as they are perfs.

At this point what I need to determine is whether the watermark is 18 or 20 (as it does not appear to be blue paper) and if it's been re-engraved. So right now it could be a Scott number 11, 12, or 20.

Is that about right? The re-engraved bit will be tough as I've nothing to compare it to. Any thoughts in that regard?

It is hard to tell by the pics. The eyes, lips and nostril on the lower pic shows the re-engraved features but the top does not seem to be re-engraved. I am not an expert on these stamps by any means. Hopefully some of the more knowledgable GB collectors will come to your aid. Looks like you have the 3 possibilities nailed (11, 12 or 20).

This is a very specialised area with whole books dedicated to this topic.
I can upload some scans later of earlier issues to use as a reference for re-engraving.
I can also show one on blue paper to confirm that yours are not.
Nice thread as this is something I need to do with my QV earlies.

I urge you, if you're interested in this area, to buy Gibbons QV Specialised. It will stop you having a heart attack!
