Bridges, Bridges, Bridges! On Stamps

Four main French routes to Santiago are commemorated in this sheet of 2015.

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is a small town on the river Nive at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains, the last stop before crossing into Spain on the pilgrimage to Santiago. The figure in the stamp (2015) is one seen in the portal of the old cathedral, Notre Dame.

The Wilson bridge of Tours crosses the Loire river in France. It dates from the middle of the 18th century and has 15 spans. In 1978 it was severely damaged but has been restored to its old glory. The famous medical doctor and researcher Bretonneau, who lived for some time in Tours and is buried there, is honored in the stamp of 1962. During his lifetime the bridge probably looked like it does in the painting by Demachy (1787). The French named their bridge after W. Wilson, because Americans had fought with the French during WWI.

The Canal de l'Ourcq dates back to the early 19th century when Napoleon ordered it built to provide water and barge transportation to Paris. It is only about 100 kilometers long and is still an important source of water for the city. Today much of it is bordered by park-like recreational areas with numerous bridges.

The roman-style Pont de Nyons dates back to the 14th century and is now an historical monument. It crosses the river Eygues with a single 43 meter long, 18 meter high, arch. Over the centuries it has withstood high waters (as seen in the stamp) in the mountainous region of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alps in southern France.

THESE STAMPS HAVE A STORY

International Bridge Agustin Justo - Getúlio Vargas - Interconnects the city of Uruguaiana (Brazil) and the city of Paso de Los Libres (Argentina). It was the first bridge built between Brazil and Argentina and the largest bridge in South America in the 1940s. Initially an inauguration of the bridge was planned for October 12, 1945, transferred to November 15, 1945 and inaugurated on May 21, 1947 by presidents Juan Domingo Peron (Argentina) and Eurico Gaspar Dutra (Brazil). The bridge measures 1,419 meters.

Brazil issued a stamp commemorating the inauguration of the Brasil-Argentina Bridge, with the image of the bridge, with the effigies of Presidents Vargas do Brasil and Justo de Argentina.
On October 19, 1945, the deposition of President Vargas of Brazil took place. With this deposition was determined the collection of the stamp issuance on November 13, 1945. On April 30, 1946, the sale of the stamps was determined only for philatelic purposes (with no franchise value), as of June 15, 1946.

The Post Office of Argentina issued the commemorative stamp to the event, as previously agreed with the Brazil, on the date of the inauguration of the bridge, that is, May 21, 1947.

In the Brazilian stamp, the view of the bridge is from the city of Paso de Los Libres to the city of Uruguaiana, including the indication of the Brazilian city at the end point of the bridge and the message Brazil-Argentina International Bridge.

In the Argentine stamp, the bridge view is from the city of Uruguaiana to the city of Paso de Los Libres with the messages Argentina-Brazil International Bridge and "Everything unites us nothing separates us". (font Filacap 154 jun/2007)

Presidente Dutra is a bridge over the São Francisco River, connecting the municipalities of Petrolina, in Pernambuco, and Juazeiro in Bahia. It was built in the 1950s. The bridge is 801 meters long, and 10 meters wide.

Thiers is a small industrial city in the central region of France known for producing cutlery of high quality. The Pont du Navire crossing the Durolle river dates from the 17th century; the old photograph shows that the river was wider in earlier days.

The city of Laval lies above the Mayenne river in western France. Laval is known for its cloth industry. The Pont Vieux, seen at high water in the stamp of 1962 and at low water in the photograph, crosses the river at the foot of the castle which dates from the 11th/12th century; the bridge was built in the 13th century.

Grenoble, up in the French Alps, is probably best known for its wonderful skiing areas, at least since the winter Olympics were held there in 1968. One can see that its skyline has changed between 1971, when philatelists met there, and now. The Marius Gontardt bridge crosses the Isere river with three large spans. You can also cross in a new gondola of the old city cable car.

Just up the Ardeche river from Pont-Saint-Esprit on the Rhone river (which was posted earlier), there is a mighty bridge crossing the river, cut out of the surrounding limestone. Nature did all the work and it is surely one of the oldest in the world; 66 meters high.
