LAPA ARCHES - THE CARIOCA AQUEDUCT
Lapa Arches (The Carioca Aqueduct) is an aqueduct in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The aqueduct was built in the middle of the 18th century to bring fresh water from the Carioca river to the population of the city. It is an impressive example of colonial architecture and engineering.

Lapa Arches is located in the centre of the city, in the Lapa neighbourhood. Since the end of the 19th century the aqueduct serves as a bridge for a popular tram that connects the city centre with the Santa Teresa neighbourhood uphill, the Santa Teresa Tramway. (wikipedia)

I think that the Carioca Aqueduct has the best destiny among aqueducts

The rail viaduct of Chaumont crosses the small river Suize, a tributary of the Marne. Built in 1855-6, it is 650 meters long and has 25 spans, most of them three stories high. The section which was destroyed during the second world war was rebuilt with concrete but covered with masonry so one doesn't see the restored part. It has a wonderful footpath gallery on the first level.

(Great information from Alexey and Jose! That's what makes a thread really interesting. I especially like the one about the Franco-Russian friendship! K.)

"The most visited ancient monument in France, listed a world heritage site by UNESCO, the Pont du Gard aqueduct remains one of humankind's great masterpieces. A marvel of Antiquity and a true technical feat, it is also a stupendous site that has regained its unspoiled state since its refurbishment. 48 metres high, it has three vertical rows of arches: 6 on the lowest level, 11 on the second level and 35 on the third and top level. Its upper part reaches a length of 273 meters (originally 360 meters when there were twelve extra arches). It served as an aqueduct until the 6th century before becoming a tollgate in the Middle Ages and finally a road bridge from the 18th to 20th century." copied from:

The Pont crosses the Gardon River; it supplied Nimes with fresh water from the Eure for centuries and was part of an aqueduct 50 kilometers long. The first stamp was never issued, the second one was a cinderella for promoting tourism "Beautiful France", the third was issued in 1930, the fourth in 2003, the fifth in 2012.

Another commemorative sheet (2015) for French treasures of philately, this one with the Pont du Gard done by H. Cheffer.

By the way, do you recognize the engraver's hands in the small emblem at the top? They are taken from the stamp of 1966 done by P. Bequet, 1932-2012; one can't really see his name in the stamp.

The Barão de Mauá International Bridge is a bridge over the Jaguarão River, on the border between Brazil and Uruguay. The bridge connects the cities of Jaguarão on the Brazilian side and Rio Branco on the Uruguayan side.
It was built between 1927 and 1930, after a treaty signed in 1918 between the two countries for payment of war debt. It was inaugurated on December 30, 1930
The bridge measures 2,113 meters in length, being 340 meters on the river Jaguarão, being 12 meters wide. In its central part there is a rail track with two gauges flanked by two tracks for vehicles of three meters each. The tracks have along the length sidewalk for pedestrians.

The old city of Blois (stamp of 2013) on the banks of the Loire River is known for the great cathedral of St. Louis and the Royal Chateau (stamp of 1960). The Pont Jacques Gabriel has 11 spans and was built in 1724.

The small town of Ingrandes lies close to Nantes, where the Loire river becomes very broad. The Pont d'Ingrandes is a steel multispan suspension road bridge built in 1922, and renovated after damage during WWII. It has 8 spans of 60 meters each; in the stamp of 2013 the river is fairly high, in the photograph it is very low.

Viaduto do Chá is the city's first viaduct, located in the Anhangabaú Valley, in the center of the city of São Paulo. It was designed by the frenchman Jules Martins in 1877, but was only inaugurated on November 6, 1892. Initially its construction was designed with metal frames, which gave way with the use, until the old structure was replaced by concrete beams present today.

Brazil 1952 - Scott 729

This viaduct also appears in a joint series of 1954 Commemorative to the 400th Anniversary of the Foundation of the City of São Paulo in the country: Angola, Cape Verde, Macao, Mozambique, Portuguese Guinea-, Portuguese India, São Tomé & Principe and Timor.

Auch is a small city in southern France with a grand old cathedral, Saint Marie, dating from the 15th century. The Pont de Lagarrasic crosses the Gers river and is part of the Pilgrimage Way of Saint James to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The paths, taken by many thousands per year, are marked by the shells of Jacobs clams seen on the stamp and the cancellation. The Via Tolosana is one of the more rugged branches of the pilgrimage path.
