The Myra creek tumbles down from the mountains in Muggendorf not far from Vienna, creating a beautiful gorge popular with thousands of tourists each summer. The gorge has 26 wooden bridges and is now a national nature treasure of Austria. The stamp of 1977 belongs to the large series "Beautiful Austria" created largely by O. Zeiller and dating from 1973 to 1983.

Murau lies in the central mountainous region of Austria on the banks of the Mur. Beneath the old stone bridge sits a river mermaid (Wassernixe) and a bit upriver in St. Georgen the Europa bridge spans the stream. It is a wooden bridge with a 45 meter span made to take heavy traffic and was finished in 1993. The stamp belongs to the "Beautiful Austria" series (1974).

The Nibelungenbrücke of Linz (named after the old saga) is today a very broad bridge carrying 6 lanes of traffic and 2 of trams. The first bridge at this site dated from the close of the 15th century and was constructed of wood; the last wooden bridge is shown in the old photograph of 1860. A new bridge is being planned a bit further along the Danube and might be seen on a stamp sometime.

Hi Alexey, I was just trying to find out where the bridge in the Nibelungen stamp of 1926 might be located, so you were quicker again. Where is Pochlern? K.

Pochlarn is in Osterreich, on Donau. I think this bringe had been destroyed very long ago by some Longobards. This is all that remains of the Nibelungen.

For a certain fee the Austrian post office lets customers create stamps with their own topics/pictures. The stamp draws attention to the statement by UNESCO that the Semmeringbahn is endangered by the construction of a new tunnel. The stamp of 2015 shows the Krauselklause viaduct. These "Meine Marke" (my stamp) stamps are already collectors' and traders' items. Several feature the Semmeringbahn. (I found a scan of this one on the web. Only 200 were printed.)

(Thanks for the info, Alexey, I passed by Pöchlarn on my way to Vienna decades ago but didn't stop. K.)

STAMPS WITH BRIDGES - 2017
Portugal - March 24th - Arrábida Bridge
The stamp had already been issued in 2008.
Arrábida Bridge is an arch bridge over the Douro River that connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia, in Portugal. It is the most downstream bridge across the Douro River, just a few kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean.
At the time of its completion in 1963, the bridge's main span of 270m was the largest of any concrete-arch bridge in the world. The total length of the deck is 493.2m, having a width of 26.5m. The arch has a rise of 52m, and the maximum clearance above river level is 70m above.

The word 'Wildbachverbauung' means putting barriers in wild mountain streams for the purpose of reducing erosion and landslides in times of sudden downpours. They are constructed of timber, masonry or concrete, etc. So the small bridge is not the main topic of this stamp but putting these barriers in the paths of torrents has become more important than ever in light of melting glaciers and other factors of climate change.

Hello Alexey, Here is one for your enjoyment!K.

An allegorical bridge. The 100th birthday of the Austrian-born composer of the opera "Die Tote Stadt" (The Dead City), E. W. Korngold (1897-1957) is commemorated in the stamp of 1997. The opera is based on the novel by the Belgian writer G. Rodenbach (1855-1898) and takes place in Brügge, which itself means bridge. The contemporary poster also has a bridge.
