Hello Alexey and Jose, I had no idea that the Schwebebahn was so well known the world over, thanks for showing the additional stamps. The young elephant Tuffi, fell into the Wupper in the summer of 1950 and was miraculously not hurt. I don't know who did the photo-montage (there was no-one taking pictures from the banks of the river) but the photo of her being led to safety along the river is real. She was a member of a traveling circus doing an advertisement stunt, and continued her life as a circus elephant to the ripe old age of 43. The elephant youngster in bronze stands in Barmen, close to where she fell.

The small walled city of Bautzen close to the eastern border of Germany celebrated its 1000 year anniversary in 2002. The small bridge at the bottom of the stamp crosses the Spree river and leads to the water tower (Alte Wasserkunst). This tower, dating from the mid 16th century, had a mechanism with which to transport water from the river into the town. Now it is a museum. Most traffic comes into the city just a bit upriver on the newer viaduct crossing the valley of the Spree.

One of the most important railway connections of Austria is the Arlbergbahn between Innsbruck and Bludenz, only 140 kilometers. Dating from the 2nd half of the 19th century it is a succession of tunnels and viaducts through very difficult terrain. Landslides and avalanches are always a threat, making upkeep very expensive. The stamp of 2013 honors the leading engineer Julius Lott.

Hi Alexey, Just beyond the view of the Semmeringbahn shown in your older stamps (1945) is the viaduct across the Kalte Rinne (or cold narrow valley) seen in the new stamp of 2001. From above the curve of this viaduct can be seen better than in the frontal view. The Semmeringbahn is now a UNESCO heritage structure. Engineer Karl von Ghega is honored in the stamp of 2012.

Hello Alexey, the stamp of 1952, for Ghega's 150 birthday and the one of 1936 in the set of famous inventors show what a hero he is to Austrians. And beyond that he was honored on the old 20 shilling banknote of the 1960s. The Semmeringbahn is the first railway route to have been chosen by the UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site, 1998. The denomination of 0,07 Eurocent suggests that the United Nations stamp was one that needed to be added to another for proper postage.

The Tauernbahn is the third, and youngest, of the amazing Austrian rail routes. It dates from the first decade of the past century and connects the area of Salzburg to Kärnten (only 80 kilometers). The huge viaduct in the old airmail stamp of 1935 could be the one at Bad Hofgastein, the train in the picture shows that the route was on electricity already then. New bridges have been built such as the one at the Angertal (valley), but the bridge at Falkenstein is still one of the most impressive; also in the newer stamp of 1984. One literally looks down upon the castle rising above the valley floor.

Is there any other stamp than this one, that pays tribute to the endless workers who constructed, maintained, renovated and in this case repaired war damage to bridges and tunnels? The stamp belongs to a set of 10 semipostals of 1948. Apparently it is the Laabenbach viaduct in Neulengbach that is being reconstructed. The word Wiederaufbau means reconstruction and was intentionally marred by the artist.

There is another series dedicated to the post-war reconstruction. One of the stamps is shown a bridge worker.

Another Austrian rail route: The short stretch from Vienna-Neustadt to Ödenburg (or Sopron in Hungary) dates back to the very beginnings of rail travel. It connects two cities that are now in two different countries. The church in the background is probably the old Benedictine Church of Sopron, the impressive viaduct is probably the one in the town of Mattersburg, halfway along the stretch.

(Hello Alexey, You were again quicker; I was saving the second set of Wiederaufbau, 1951, for today. Greetings Kris)

And this is also the bridges of Austria ... Ferdinand Square in Lviv in 1840, a bridge across the Poltva River. At the watercolor in 1847, the bridge turned into an underground reservoir. Now the river is completely hidden underground

STAMPS WITH BRIDGES - 2017
Israel - 4 April 2017 - Jerusalem - 50 Years of Reunification
Chords Bridge also called the Bridge of Strings or Jerusalem Light Rail Bridge, is a side-spar cable-stayed bridge in Jerusalem, Israel. The structure was designed by the Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava and is used by Jerusalem Light Rail's Red Line, which began service on August 19, 2011. Incorporated in the bridge is a glass-sided pedestrian bridge enabling pedestrians to cross from Kiryat Moshe to the Jerusalem Central Bus Station.
