Aqua Claudia, built in the 1st century AD, brought water from the springs in Subiaco, east of Rome, to the city. Length: 43 miles (69 km); underground for 34 miles (55 km) from its source, then on arches for 9 miles (14 km) to its terminus on the Caelian Hill. The flow was about 190000 cubic meters per day. Amazing! Semipostal stamp of 1926, for Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale, better known as the Blackshirts, the Italian Fascist paramilitary groups. Note the fascis on either side of the stamp, old and new symbols of power, such as in Rome or in the US Congress (photo).

The painting by van Gogh titled 'Bridge in the rain: After Hiroshige.'(1887) Van Gogh had a fascination for Japanese art and was known to have painted his versions of famous Japanese works. This one is a combination of Hiroshige's famous work 'Rainstorm' and his own of people on bridges. Hiroshige created the rain effect with very fine slanted lines while van Gogh had his own version of somewhat thicker strokes.

(Hi, Alexey, fascinating detail! K.)

"The Bridge at Trinquetaille" across the Rhone in Arles by van Gogh (1888) was anonymously sold some years ago for 20 million, so I guess we'll not see the original ever again. What would Vincent have thought? The new bridge is a 2-lane road with sidewalks.

The Pont des Arts was sketched by Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) in 1967 and was the motive on a stamp for his 50th birthday. That's the footbridge in Paris that has so many locks attached to the railings that they came down.

Hi Lionel, Welcome! Indeed there is a railway viaduct in the background! And a steam engine as well. Could it be the viaduct across the Yangtse at Wuhan, or one like it? Your stamp is most likely from the definitive set issued in 1923; last of the series. Are these definitives engraved?
