Bridges, Bridges, Bridges! On Stamps

A few from Germany and Occupied Territories:

Thanks for showing. In fact this is Constanta (Kustendje- turkish name, because Dobrogea was part of the Ottoman Empire until 1877-78- and this stamp is issued in 1865. Latine name is Tomis, here was exiled Ovidius, roman poet), a sea port. D.B.S.R=Danube Black Sea Railway- english company. They built a railway line bw. Constanta (Kustendje, Tomis) - Cernavoda, following an agreement with the Turkish guvernment. The stamp is litography. It`s a wiew of Constanta, in the background a train. (it`s no Cernavoda, no bridge). 20 paras costed a postal sending on that route (Constanta-Cernavoda), no matter where was posted (clever!)- that`s why only one value, 20 paras was issued. If the letter was sent further, usually the Austrian Post forwarded the letter (i.e. from Cernavoda to Bucharest, Wiena etc. or from Constanta to Constantinople - the Loyd naval company- the receiver had to pay when letter was presented- they applied Austrian (or Levante- soldi)stamps. My guess after consulting a Romanian stamp catalogue is that first one is a reissue (there are reissues also on yellow or (orange)pink paper. Originally paper is blueish green (whatever that would mean- I don`t have any), the second might be just that. On the Constanta (Kustendje)- Cernavoda route the stamps were cancelled with ink (DBSR had no pmk). If on your second stamp what I see is the margin of a pmk, that must be Austrian (stamp from a forwarded cower).

My favorite bridge goes across the Mississippi River, Scott 293. Too bad its not structurally sound...

Here is an image of an airmail stamp depicting a slightly more conventional bridge: the Alexander III Bridge, and, in the background, the Petit Palais, Paris, designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon, and issued by France on June 13, 1949, Scott No. C28, Y&T No. PA28. Note the fine artistic touch of the swooping swallows, nicely balancing the stamp's design.

How is the height of a Bridge measured?
to the surface of the road/railway/aqueduct?
or to the top of the support pillars?

The query was raised, during observations
on a supposedly highest bridge in Jammu Kashmir.

The Pont Valentré is a fourteenth century six-span fortified stone arch bridge crossing the Lot River to the west of Cahors, France. Here is an image of a stamp depicting the bridge, designed and engraved by Charles Mazelin, and issued by France on October 15, 1955, Scott No. 777, Y&T No. 1039.

I haven't seen these very popular Scottish bridges: the Forth Road Bridge and the Forth Railway Bridge (on the background of the first stamp), close to Edimburgh.

BAYERN1kreuzer - Great images! Thanks for posting them. Also, the engraved Lu Ting bridge stamp is particularly dramatic and exciting.

Here is an image of a stamp with a subject that is by comparison quite mundane, but is nevertheless visually appealing: Mayombe Viaduct, designed by French-born Canadian graphic designer Gérard Mariscalchi, engraved by Jean Miermont, and issued by Congo on June 24, 1968, Scott No. 173.
