Whenever I buy large lots of mixed stamps, I usually don't pay much attention to the South American ones. With the latest lot, there were a couple that I haven't been able to identify that look more interesting than usual. Before I consign them to my 'South America' packet, I though I'd ask people here if there is anything of interest among them.

All observations and comments are greatly appreciated.

Jerry B., that's a whole lot more. I was just hoping someone would say something if any of the stamps were of particular interest, which it seems they aren't!

I might just revert to my usual practice of dumping South American stamps in an envelope that I never look at.

It's interesting to notice the difference in Scott and SG CV for the Ecuador stamp, however.

Well if the question is interest, I have a great interest in the 5c UPU stamp with busts of San Martin, Bolivar and Washington. I think it is fascinating that Colombians felt the need to add Washington to the stamp to ensure that San Martin and Bolivar would be considered to be in the same league.

Hi jimjam2

I find South American (and African) overprinted stamps quite fascinating. There are sometimes variations (large and small) in the overprints. Sometimes these are listed in catalogues or on special interest sites, but mostly they are not listed anywhere that I've found. Because South America is so rich in overprints (four of your eight stamps are overprinted) it makes quite a fascinating study for someone who is interested in this sort of thing. Although I'm only a beginner in this field, I've come across some very interesting specimens already and usually at 10c each here in Australia.

Looking specifically at your stamps, the 40c Orange Colombian stamp appears to have a mark on the the overprinted "A", right leg near the top.

Thanks for the info about the busts jbcev80, I'll have to look through the Argentinian ones again.

Hi peterethio,

I do not see a mark as you described. The 'A' looks like that. There is also an 'L' ( for Lansa ) in the same type face. There is a previous set with a more normal looking 'A' and 'L'.

peterethio, yes I like overprints too, which is why some of this latest lot caught my attention. In particular, I like the big 'A.' I've never seen a stamp with an overprint like that before. It's so elegant! I'd like to see the complete set lined up, if indeed there is a set!

These are the ones I have at present. Some are from a previous set as per jbcev80's post. Thanks for this info jbcev80, I appreciate it . I collect both overprinted and unoverprinted specimens where available.

The ones at the end are stamps I hope to find overprinted with letters. Do you know which have overprints jbcev80?

As you can see from the two 'A's side by side, yours (on the right) appears to be a little different with a small piece missing as described previously.

Hi jimjamtwo,peterethio

It is unfair to compare the two stamps since jimjamtwo's stamp is 'shortened'.

There are definitely 4 sets:
====================================================================
Normal Type Face
'L' Lansa 11 stamps 5c-5P
Scott C175-C185 Mint: 50.25 Used: 48.25
SG(Lansa) 10-20 Mint: 13£ Used: 12£

'A' Avianca 13 stamps 5c-5P
Scott C186-C198 Mint: 36.35 Used: 29.85
SG(Avianca) 1-13 Mint: 12£ Used: 8£ 50p

====================================================================
'Fancy' Type Face
'L' Lansa 8 stamps 40c-5P
Scott C200-C207 Mint: 85.55 Used: 77.35
SG(Avianca) 21-28 Mint: 15£ Used: 15£'A' Avianca 9 stamps 40c-5P

Scott C208-C216 Mint: 57.75 Used: 8.60
SG(Avianca)14-22 Mint: 15£ Used: 3£ 50p
====================================================================

In addition to the normal placement of the overprint. you will find these issues with inverted, misplaced, double, etc. overprints.

The stamps overprinted were from the 1948 Issue:
Scott C151-C163
SG 691-703

I have all four sets but unfortunately I do not have a scanner so I cannot post a picture. However, peterethio's photo is pretty well representative of these issues.

Today Avianca survives as the national airline of Colombia.

Hello

Well, i´m not a expert, but the problem is the Scott Catalog, in the last years they are increase the Ecuador stamps value to the sky, I think is the same relation on with other countries.

Only look this, on my old Scott

O192
Scott 1970 US$0.08
Scott 1975 US$0.08
Scott 1981 US$0.08
Scott 2003 US$0.20
Scott 2008 US$0.25
Scott 2009 US$0.50

But When you take a US$0.20 common stamp like a base, the Scott catalog value has increase in a 150% in 5-8 years!?

The $1.50 I think is for a mint stamp.

Hi novato,

The $1.50 is Scott's 2011 price for Mint and Used.

As I once said I am stopping Ecuador at 2010 because the prices are now ridiculous. I do not know how or on what Scott is basing Ecuador prices. If it is dealer price lists I wish they would publish a list of the dealers so I can stay away from them.

Does the entire Continent of South America have more than 8 stamps with value over $1 ? I'm not sure what the people who decide the catalog pricing have against South America,
but they got stiffed in the value department. Don't get me wrong, SA has some gorgeous Stamps that are really 2nd to none in beauty, but I have a lot, especially from Honduras late 1800's kept by a family member who actually lived and worked in Honduras and the whole collection is worth $2.00.

Hi

Novato, when I say stop in 2010 I meant this year. Even Colombia is getting ridiculous but that country has family ties so I will not stop collecting the country. What catalog is there for Ecuador? I thought one catalog was Cataldi (cannot find a copy). I have the albums from Banco Central and the book on the early issues (I don't put stamps in the Banco Central albums but use it as a reference). What Scott number(s)is $500? If you are going to sell it for $40 save any listing fees as I may buy it if I do not already have it.

In reference to South America catalogs.

Colombia has two main catalogs published in Colombia. One is published by Alvaro Barriga and one by Leo Temprano. The new catalogs are not specialized. The last specialized ones were published by these two dealers in the 1980's. There are books about the early years of air mail in Colombia by Gebaur and Londoño and there is a lot of information written about the SCADTA issues. Some of these books have some pricing for SCADTA issues.

For Venezuela I use a Blanco 1992 catalog and since I am really interested in the early issues (Escuelas) this suffices. There is one other but I do not remember the name or if it is still published.

I have not checked but I believe most of the South American countries have catalogs for their country, mostly published by dealers i.e.; Barriga, Temprano and Blanco.

Just try to buy some of the early issues of South America and you will answer your question. I know of 2 countries that put out some questionable issues, Ecuador in the 50's and Paraguay in the 60's. At one time these were cheap and a dealer would almost pay you to take them. Then Scott decided to list these issues and they now sell for ridiculous prices. In general dealer prices are reasonable for South America stamps, but as Fernando stated, Ecuador prices are ridiculous.

A lot of Central America stamps, and Ecuador, are worthless due to Nicholas Seebeck:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_F._Seebeck
http://www.linns.com/howto/refreshe...rcourse.aspx

For verified (they are real) stamps the prices will be high. There is a book published about the issues and how to determine the reprints. They are not fakes but truly reprints printed with the original plates.

Note that Latim America philately is really in two geographic groups, Central America (Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, etc.) and South America (everything South of Panama).
