Dominica Scott 105: G.P.O. DOMINICA cancel, probably favor cancelled. That's not an asterisk that's overinked but an oddball buglike symbol. |

Another nice cancel, Johan. The Peter Feuser catalog gives it a slight premium for usage during the Prussian period. The later usages go up in value, with the pfennige and pfennig period usage in blue ink ("b") showing a premium of 50 dm. |

Irish Mail cancelled at the post office counters still provides an opportunity for interesting and challenging cancels, especially since many smaller towns in the Irish /Celtic language are not easily found, even if they are clear and complete enough to read. This one got an immediate "hit" on an internet search. CATHAIR NA MART 05. 9. 18 This is The cancellation of town formerly known as Westport (ca 1780), population 6198. From wikipedia, "Westport (Cathair na Mart, meaning 'city of the beef cattle', historically anglicized as Cathernamart) is a town in County Mayo in Ireland. It is at the south-east corner of Clew Bay, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean on the west coast of Ireland." |

Thanks GMC89 and Johan. Here is a cancel from the old city of Piura, Peru. The stamp is also interesting,IMO, because of the fine quality of the engraving and paper, which is grilled. From wikipedia, "Piura (Quechua: Piwra) is a city on northwestern Peru located in the Sechura Desert on the Piura River. It is the capital of the Piura Region and the Piura Province. Its population was 484,475 as of 2017. It was here that Spanish Conquerer Francisco Pizarro founded the third Spanish city in South America and first in Peru, San Miguel de Piura, in July or August 1532. Piura declared its independence from Spain in 1821." |

Latvia Scott# 210: KEMERI cds. The "K" is an accented character that won't reproduce here. Kemeri was a health resort with sulfur springs and mud baths. It became part of the city of Jurmala in 1959. |

French Congo Scott# 37: BANGUI cds. Perhaps someone can explain if this is a legitimate cancel/usage grandfathered in, or just a forgery or favor cancel. French Congo was dissolved in 1910 and a cancel reading Ubangi-Chari-Chad is from that resultant part and time period. |

Togo (Scott# 245): DASSARI cancel. It's apparently small enough not to show up on the limited maps found online. Wikipedia says it's in "Virgonia prefecture of Zagrovia county", where there is no Virgonia prefecture (and probably never was) nor a system of counties in Togo. Hail, hail Freedonia!(?) |

Thanks patg23!
From Scott (Peru, provisional issues): "During the Chilean-Peruvian War which took place in 1879-82, the Chilean forces occupied the two largest cities in Peru, Lima and Callao. As these cities were the source of supply of postage stamps, Peruvians in other sections of the country were left without stamps and were forced to the expedient of making provisional issues from whatever material was at hand. many of these were former cancelling devices made over for this purpose. Counterfeits exist for many of these overprinted stamps." |
