Need some help with the Previous Uploads Search, can't get text to work!!! Works fine if I know when I posted the image I'm looking for, but can't enter town name and date to find image? Three postmarks today. Ukiah & San Fran RPO, a postal card from Eureka with an un-reported postmark. It's listing dimensions are 1C(ircle) 25.5 mm (diameter) 11L (mm from bottom of 1st town letter to 1st State letter) I've "painted" the image to show this. This postmark's usage is between 1902 to 1908, duplexed with Ellipse type 51. Eureka, and a postcard from Mendocino. |

I found 8 Dec 2 postmarks this am, three of them have been previously posted. The un-posted 5 are; Arcata, Pieta, Arcata & Elinor RPO. Ok, here is where I explain the different RPOs. Humboldt County had four RPOs before they were connected to Northwestern Pacific; Eureka & Hydesville 27 miles May 29 1889 - Jun 17 1895 became Eureka & Scotia 29 miles Jun 17 1895 - *Sep 29 1911 became Arcata & Elinor 42 miles *Sep 29 1911 - *Jun 24 1914 became Arcata & Dyerville 47 miles * Jun 24 1914 - *Jun 17 1915 became Eureka & San Fran 284 miles *Jun 17 1915 - Jun 1 1956 became Willits & San Fran HPO. The asterisk denotes approximate date. Very approximate! Eureka & Scotia was still carrying mail on Jan 7 1913. I'll show you in 38 days. Arcata & Elinor RPO, Eureka, and Cummings. |

Didn't find much this morning, three entries, one is an incoming postal card that arrives on this date, another is a postcard, both have been posted and I'm trying not to repost too often. So, just one postcard today. Northwestern, |

Phil:
Sorry to be a pain, but the postcard appears to be dated December 31 (which is in line with the Happy New Year message).
Regardless, keep 'em coming. |

Quote:know of Elk but please tell a little about Northwestern Thanks, Neeskens13. Ever have one of those days...? I know I did the day I entered the Northwestern card into my "Cover by Decade" list, didn't see Dec 31 then or today. Well, proves that I'm not AI. Even forgot part of my phone number this morning!! Northwestern was mostly a mill with a little town around it, about 5 miles North West of Willits. Wonder where they came up with the name? P. O. opened Feb 17,1906 and closed Jul 30 1927. In that 21.5 years, the office used 3 different Circle date stamps, The one above being the last. A busy office (at least for the 3 years reported) as Postmaster compensation for; 1907 $408.00 1909 387.00 1911 290.00 |

Three items found this morning, 2 Redwood Empire postmarks and an incoming pc. Quote: [I ,of course, know of Elk but please tell a little about Northwestern Pieta Good call, Randy! The clipped Pieta cover is one of what Richard W. Helbock would refer to as a Group IV cover (open 19th century, closed pre-PC) a six-year office, opened Aug 13,1891 and closed May 31,1897. Located somewhere between Cloverdale and Hopland, wasn't big enough to mark on any map I can find. Postmaster compensation was reported in 1893 as $86.00. I called the cover clipped because it was cut open on the left, giving it that off-center look. Williams and the Western Cover Society rated Pieta's 2 postmarks Men-2980 as 4 and Men-2990 (on cover above) as 3. Helbock in United States Post Offices Volume 1 The West rates anything Pieta as 7. Here the back of Pieta Dec 2, 1896 Dec 4th. Rio Dell, with it's fancy 2 ring ornate CDS, duplexed with a Wheel of Fortune. (2nd of 2) Hardy, actually an incoming postcard, Hardy marked it. and Falk. Edit to add duplex info. |

Good morning, three for today. But first, I need to present a brief RPO history. Nationwide, Aug 1 1882 was the proposed changeover data from Route Agent service on all lines, but the changeover took considerable tome and it wasn't until 1886 that the R. P. O. system marking became the norm. On San Francisco & North Pacific RR the Route Agent marking was Clov. & San Fran. AGT until Jun 7 1889 when the line became Northwestern Pacific and the Ukiah & San Fran. RPO. One month earlier on May 29 1889 Eureka & Hydeville RPO (misspelled) became Northwestern Pacific's 1st RPO. Eureka & Hydeville RPO, Ferndale, and Calpella. |

Good morning. Two Mendocino covers for today. One from the "Lost Coast", a section of the Mendocino and Humboldt coast line that California gave up trying to push a road through in the 1930's. There are were 5 towns in the Mendocino County Lost Coast, Andersonia, Kenny, Monroe, Moody, and Rockport. Six, if we count Hardy on the southwestern corner.Kenny, this office was opened twice. Aug 20,1888 - May 15,1903 and Jan 19,1907 - Mar 31,1924, today's cover is from the earlier open period, and Willits. |

Good morning. Two postmarks today, one is an un-answered 9-year-old question. I posted this cover here 9 years ago, top of page 130. A link to the post below. https://goscf.com/t/11887&whichpage=130#451250 I first saw this cover in Schuyler Rumsey's Dec 2002 sale 14 as auction lot #607 described as; "Wells Fargo & CO/ Ophir, blue oval handstamp (Leutz.1-17) with matching "Free" in double line oval (Leutz.7-7) on cover with manuscript Bucksport, Cal postmark of origin & manuscript 5 rate to Gold Hill with masonic address, perhaps the reason Wells, Fargo & Co carried the cover free." The only clues as to year date of this cover is the 5-cent rate and the fact the Well's, Fargo & Co carried the cover from Ophir to Gold Hill. Was there an inter California 5 cent rate? No 5 cent inter California letter rate. BUT, under Domestic Letter Rate 1845 July 1 Under 300 miles Prepaid or Collect 5 cents April 1 1855 Prepayment made Compulsory. My conclusion was that it was collect and is therefore Dec 8,1854, which makes this the earliest known HUM- 1010. and Talmage. |
