I love the covers, in particular I love the CA covers. I have history here, my grandmother was a 1906 earthquake survivor. I was surprised to see a Fort Bragg CA cover, and not a Fort Bragg NC cds. My spouse looked it up and sure enough there is a Fort Bragg Calif.. It's bad enough having one fort named after the worst commanding general of either side in the Civil War, now I learn there are 2. Go figure... For explanation see Sam R Watkins diary, "Company Aytch, a Sideshow to the big Show". A humorous, insightful look into serving under Bragg."The General who Could argue with himself". Cheers mark |

Yep, there is a Fort Bragg, Cal. My middle sister, my son and I were born there, The commander of the new stockade way up on the Mendocino coast served under Braxton Bragg while Bragg was a U.S. soldier before he (Lieut. P.B. Johnson?) was sentenced sent there to keep the indigenous people under control. Note that the first opening of the post office was Feb 15,1858. I do have the response to Johnson's request for transfer dated May 12 1863, after the post office closed the second time. |

Three today. Mendocino, I think this is the earliest known. This stamp was demonetized in 1861 but probably took effect later in California. John H. Williams and the Western Cover Society only found one other dated Feb 10, 1864. Mendocino didn't have a year dated postmark until 1879, I don't have much faith in the penciled in year date in MEN-2310. the cover, incoming Trinidad, and Point Arena. |

February 18 1929 Registered letter from St. Peter's Antigua to Glasgow, Scotland Saint Peter is a parish on the island of Antigua. Parham is the capital of that parish today. St. Peter's was the name of the post office. also1911 Registered letter from Kingstown, St. Vincent to London, England If you were to google Ludwig Zissler, you would discover that maybe he was born in Germany in 1860, advertised in the Gold Coast Chronicle in 1896, seeking West African postage stamps, lived in London while doing this, and passed away in Philadelphia in 1927. Belatedly, I give him thanks for this philatelically inspired cover he created. |

Just one cover today, a U. S. P. O. D. Registered Package. I do wonder how many postmasters followed the opening instructions (On the right end of cover) strictly and if any of them just used scissors. Arcata. |

Quote: Note how the month slug got inserted. I am still trying to figure that out. That is difficult to explain, Backwards? Not upside down, more like inside out or reversed. 1 and a half covers today. Quote: But what a cover! It just sheds light on how things worked back in the day. The "half" cover, the Arcata Registered Package also required a signature on the reverse, in this case it was a RPO clerk dater. Have yet to see a "re-enveloped" Registered package. See third paragraph at bottom. and Ukiah. Edit to add signature and re-enveloped comments |

Quote: Also: wonder if England just sent them a defective slug? That is a possibility, but then why didn't New Hebrides use an older post marker? I suppose it may have been a busy day, and no one noticed. Love the handwriting on that cover. Two postcards today. Mendocino, and Point Arena. |

Adding a small data point to the inquiry about "U. S. P. O. D. Registered Package. I do wonder how many postmasters followed the opening instructions (On the right end of cover) strictly and if any of them just used scissors." Of the two USPOD Registered Package envelopes that I have, both are properly sliced with a knife from X to X, indenting but not cutting through the back side of the envelope. (postit notes are inserted to better show the location of the slice). Registered mail was serious business, and the instructions on the back conclude with "Failure to comply with above instructions will be sufficient cause for removal." I don't think anyone would want to risk getting fired over using scissors instead of a knife. Especially if some of the contents was found to be missing, I wouldn't want to be the one caught scissor-handed and possibly on the hook for any discrepancy. |
