March 15 1962 - Brazzaville, Congo to Fulda, Germany What is interesting about this cover is the use of three different Equatorial African stamps, but not a Congo stamp. and1972 - Hamilton, Bermuda to Kingston, Jamaica Bermuda went decimal in 1970. Usually, old sterling stamps are accepted for one year after the transition; assuming that was the case, one could wonder why this cover slipped through the system. We know the year of the postmark is 1972 as the ten-penny stamp was not issued until 1965. |

Five this morning, three of them are RPOs, two different lines. D. Mills & SanFran RPO, North Pacific Coast. The Mobile Post Office Society's Narrow-Gauge catalog lists this 26.5 mm CDS as NPC-I-1, used from 1886 to 1889. Pretty crowded in that CDS, D. Mills rather than Duncan and no space between San and Fran also no period after Fran. MPOS doesn't list a month, just 1886, but I think it is early, within the 1st quarter of the year. D. Mills & SanFran RPO, Eureka, Eureka & Scotia RPO, Arcata & Elinor RPO, the MPOS catalog says Eureka & Scotia's name was changed on Sep 29,1911 when the line extended from 29 miles to 42 miles, but the CDS didn't arrive until sometime in the first half of 1913. My latest Eureka & Scotia is Jan 7,1913, and the earliest Arcata & Elinor is Jun 22, 1913. The MPOS catalog shows a usage from Sep 29,1911 to Jun 24, 1914 (about 35 months) when actual use was about 14 months. Now for something completely different, the Launching of the USS Humboldt. |

Only one today and it's not from or to either County. I liked the view side, a logging train on a curved trestle. Somewhere in the Northwest. Willard, New Mexico. |

March 20 1938 - Brazzaville, Middle Congo to Paris, France (a first flight cover)BRAZZAVILLE R.P. 20 MARS 38 MOYEN CONGO The image of this cover was not of the best resolution, and I debated whether to post it or not. However, I liked it enough to proceed. According to the StampWorld.com online catalogue, the postage stamps on this cover are listed as Middle Congo (Moyen Congo). And yet, the stamps are Moyen Congo overprinted Afrique Equatoriale Francaise. At Brazzaville in 1938, the postmark was Moyen Congo. Again, with the resolution being so sub-standard, I am including photos of unused copies of the two stamps affixed to the letter., These stamps were issued between 1924 and 1927 according to SW.com. |

March 23 1951 - Cayenne, French Guyana to Paris France If the rate for this letter was 170 francs, note that 20 francs was paid with a damaged Inini stamp. Inini was a territory carved out of French Guyana that was created to speed up development of the interior of the colony. Inini postage stamps were withdrawn in 1946 and first appeared in the 1930's. and1962 - Industrious Hill, Bahamas to Nassau, BahamasMr. Brown was mailing this letter to himself to obtain the postmark. Industrious Hill is a small, populated place located on Cat Island in The Bahamas. |

Four for today, all Mendocino County. Only one previously posted. (Caspar) Chirstine used their fanciest and earliest postmark on this cover tied to a circled US killer. California Town Postmarks 1850 - 1935 records Jun 29,1776 to Jan, 5 1879 as usage span. Gualala, Caspar, and Ornbaum. |
