May 19 Commemorating 3 events: The Battle of Crooked Billet, which the Americans lost to the British, a first mail flight of a helicopter from Hatboro PA to Philadelphia, and the dedication of The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. I love the term 'autogiro'! I would be interested to hear from any SCF aircraft experts who may be able to identify the helicopter in the picture. I know graphics artists often take liberties with images so it may be impossible to tell. edited to remove erroneous Wikipedia information... see wonderful link provided by wt1 to get the accurate story |

Once again misled by Wikipedia...I knew there would be someone on SCF who would know more about this!! And I'm not surprised that it's you, wt1! What a wealth of knowledge you are! Karen |

May 19 2012. 41st Stamp exhibition in the Catalan city of Ripoll (100 km North of Barcelona) "Modern Art in Ripoll", organized by the Philatelic and Numismatic Association of Ripoll. On the postmark there can be seen Catalonia's arms on a metal ancient lamp. The stamp features a little 1912 Modern Art chapel in Ripoll. |

A quick check on the USPS website and Wiki suggests that Woodman, WI has an operating post office to this day, yet they have a population of only 96, and the USPS does not have them on the list for any reduction in hours of operation. Interesting. I guess the 96 residents must be stamp collectors or something, as they apparently have enough business to justify keeping that post office open full time. |

Another for May 22: #926 I have always liked the redundancy of the SS Savannah, the Prius of its time--- sails and paddlewheel! Use the free wind energy when you can get it and supplement with fossil fuel when you need to. |

Nice House of Farnum cachet on that Steamship FDC. Unusual first day cancellation, too, with 7 bars used in the cancellation portion of the postmark (rather than the typical 5). |

May 23: I found this in some kiloware I got a few years ago. Unfortunately somebody sliced the perfs from the bottom. Kaltenkirchen is just north of Hamburg. I especially like the Kaltenkirchen coat-of-arms on the cancellation. Here are the coat-of arms and the iconic tower that is depicted on it. |

May 23 and May 24 PO at Marina del Rey apparently didn't like the wimpy cancellation job they did at the Santa Monica PO. |
