May 25, 1895, St. Cloud MN I don't know very much about cancellations but I liked the flag draped on the corner. Are those 'footballs' on the stamp? |

Here's an interesting piece of historical research on the cover you just posted as addressed to Nettie Sanborn of Clearwater, Minnesota. She was age 8 per the 1880 US Census, an adopted daughter of Dexter and Mary Collins of Clearwater, Minnesota. It is interesting that Collins' as well as Nettie's parents were all born in the New England area and must have later relocated to Minnesota. In any event, it would have made Nettie Sanborn 23 years of age at the time the letter was received by her: |

Quote: Are those 'footballs' on the stamp? The "killer" portion of the duplex cancel is sometimes referred to as a "football cancel". If you ever get bored with your stamps and want to put together a fun little collection, try finding as many different numbers in those "football killers" as you can. Here's my try from the other day...I got as high as #42 (although I'm sure there are higher numbers around, too.): |

Was it common in those days to add a penny's postage for mail outside a city, even if it were inside the state? Now it seems odd. |

Nice cover on the inaugural trip of the S.S. Normandie. Sadly, it ended up like this by 1942: |
