Here's a fun 'cross over' calendar piece. Though not a cover, this cheque does have stamps. It was made out on May 29 1933, back stamped cleared on May 30 and 31, and rubber stamped again on the front on June 1. Four in one!

In 1880 Jas. S. Kirk & Co. was the largest soap manufacturer in the world. In 1929 they were taken over by Proctor & Gamble.

I used to love Kirk's Castile Soap. The smell reminds me of a boyfriend I had when I was young.

June 4, 1892, Bismarck ND

June 5, 1892, Worthington MN

Both of these covers and the one I posted on June 3 were to the same business. I haven't yet been able to identify the business but judging by the mail they got I suspect they were a department store.

Nowadays the location is in downtown business Minneapolis on the street where Mary Tyler Moore threw her hat in the air. It is also a few blocks southeast of Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins baseball team, and several blocks northwest of the Metrodome, home of the Minnesota Vikings football team.

A quick google search (as trusty a stamp collecting tool as your tongs!) shows Mr. G Hallaner of 243 Nicollet Ave. was a watch maker, or Horologist.

You have quiet an impressive collection of covers, kehess. Looking forward to seeing more!

Thanks, James!

That explains a lot. I have been searching under 'Hallauer'--- there are quite a few Hallauers in the Minneapolis area too. Some of the other covers I have for that address are jewelry related, so for Mr Halleran to be a watch maker makes perfect sense! I'll post some of those when their date comes up.

Thanks for the resource too. I'll have to go back and see if some of my dead-end searches will be more fruitful using google books.

As to the cover addressed to W. Strohmeier of Minneapolis, MN, I found a "William Strohmeier" (b. Sept. 1853) in a 1900 Census, his home address at that time being 1324 8 St., NW, Minneapolis, noting his occupation as "Jeweler". Probably the same person, especially since the other covers relate to Jewelers or Watchmakers.
