I just bought a nice lot of vintage European stamps on ebay the other day. I've only got the scan provided by the seller to go on, but this stamp looks like causing me a headache or two.

Does anyone know what the overprint ('TYSIECT') means? It looks like a surcharge, but I can't identify a currency called 'Tysiect' anywhere in the world.

It is an overprint revaluing the stamp. The overprint "Tysiecy"means "thousand".

It looks to be Poland SG202 (1923), surcharge, 10 TYSIECY (=10000) on 25m violet and buff. The original stamp is SG170 (1921).

What catalogue did you get that from, rod222?

And what a stylish overprint it is! I hope mine turns out to have that kind of detail (which I rather doubt).

Well, I'm glad you found a use for it!

I've got a large lot of vintage Polish stamps coming, so I'm sure I will be able to give you the incentive to use it at least once more. I wouldn't want you to waste your 50c now, would I?

Thanks for posting!
