That is neat CDNum. haven't seen that before, but I am no expert of India at all. It looks like it is supposed to be there.

It is not a scratched surface by chance? Doesn't look like it but just checking.

Nice stamp too, Stange cancel.

Hi Puzzler,

It look like a small Post'Age diamond :)

I like it. It is not a scratch.

Thank you!

I think it's a plate error. I have the same stamp and it's not on mine.

When one sees a spot surrounded by no ink,
I think that indicates a spot of dirt on the plate.
Quite often this happens with a perforation piece
adhering to the ink on the plate. (a large dot)

Tony: recognise the cancel?
Would you make that Boroda? (now Vadadora)
Thanks

And I agree, too: a transient bit of dirt on the printing plate, but not a plate flaw. The dirt, or whatever it was, settled on the plate, protruded from the surface of the plate and picked up the ink itself but prevented the surrounding plate from being inked.

A nice curiosity, but being transient, nothing more than a curiosity.

Rod, I couldn't be sure of the location without seeing the Circle letter. It looks a little like 'A', and there's a sub-office number - '3'?

Thanks Tony,
I just guessed A17 over 3, boxed.

You're probably right, Rod: A-17-3. According to Robson Lowe, A-17 would have been Etawah up to 1881, when it was assigned to Bareilly. Given the stamp, I'd incline to the earlier date. So this could be some sub-office under Etawah.
